Robert Smith Mackay
Bob was born in Branchton, ON January 11, 1937. He passed away peacefully with family by his side in Gananoque, ON September 10, 2023. He was a dedicated husband and life partner to Gwendolyn (Randall) Mackay and hero to his daughter Shelley Hipwell and son James Mackay. He was a superstar to his grandchildren Olivia Hipwell, Elise Mackay and Colin Mackay.
Bob was the youngest of 4 brothers – Ken, Doug (deceased), and Tom (deceased). His parents James and Anna emigrated from Scotland and eventually established a 100 acre farm near Branchton, ON. They didn’t have a whole lot and that stuck with him. He left school early to work, eventually spending most of his years as a butcher for Dominion Stores in Galt (Cambridge) and Brantford. He retired at 55 and never looked back. He was also a very popular auctioneer, doing antique auctions throughout southern Ontario for many years.
Bob and Gwen purchased an acre of land about a mile from his childhood home in 1964 and built the house themselves that they would live in for almost 60 years. When his health started to fail they moved to eastern Ontario, spending a year with Shelley and then his final year at Carveth Care Center in Gananoque ON.
Bob loved to fish, and spent a lot of time doing it in Ontario and Florida. He and Gwen spent their retirement traveling and camping or on buses and cruise ships. He also loved to wood carve and leaves behind many mementos that we will cherish.
He will be remembered as a laid back, caring, kind and simple man. He was completely devoted to Gwen and they were inseparable.
