Obituary
Bob (Robert) Duplessis, fisherman, metal detector enthusiast, pirate Grampy, and beloved Dad, passed away surrounded by loved ones on Sunday, July 23rd.
Dad was born in Saint John and lived his whole life here. He was an accomplished jack-of-all trades and worked for many years as a Brinks armoured guard – he was especially proud of that work. But the jobs that he did to make a living did not truly define his fabulous character – as mentioned above, he was an avid fisherman, prankster, antique hunter, metal detector extraordinaire who found great pleasure in sleuthing out treasures, and then pulling them out of his treasure trove of a truck to share with you. If you needed to find anything out of the ordinary – Dad was your guy. He was a great outdoorsman who did not like spending time inside. He was an amateur photographer and loved to send us his animal pics. He had too many hobbies to name. He spent his retirement years pursuing all of these hobbies but still went to his “office” (Tim Hortons) every day to meet up with his buddies to shoot the breeze. If not there, you could find him at the flea market on Sundays. Dad’s favourite food was lobster and he was treated to it on any occasion that we could find.
Dad had special bonds with each of his kids and spent every Saturday with his very best buddy Tammy yard saling for treasures to refurbish and sell. He loved fishing and going metal detecting with Rob. Dad loved history and joined Delancey’s Brigade in 1982 and made life-long friends as part of this group. It soon became a family hobby. He passed on his passion for history to Antoinette and they loved to visit museums together.
Our Dad was one cool guy – think the Fonz, but way handier and you’ll have an image of him in your mind. He still dressed in black and leather, t-shirts and jeans – even in his 70s.
Dad leaves behind so many loved ones – his three children, Tammy, Rob and Antoinette. His grandchildren Micaela, Isabelle, Gabriel, Cameron, Theodore and Oliver. Fishing buddy Chris. His siblings, and nieces and nephews. Wife of 30 years and mother of his children, Yvonne and special friend Patty and all of the other ladies who loved to flirt with him – you know who you are. He was quite the ladies man. Dad will also be missed by his little fur buddy Maxx.
Special shout out to Dr. Burnell for her no-nonsense care over the last 8 months and the amazing nurses in the oncology clinic and on 5A South for their compassion and care.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, July 27th from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Fundy Funeral Home on Westmorland Road, Saint John. In honour of our Dad, we would love it if you came and shared your memories and stories about him with us. We want to celebrate his life and the impact that he had on all of us in his own, quiet, fun-loving (and sometimes salty) ways.
A funeral service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church, Uptown on Friday, July 28th at 10 a.m. All welcome.
We love you so very much Dad – we only wish that we could have had you here longer. Even though it wasn’t long enough, it could never be long enough, we will always treasure all of our time spent with you. We will keep fishing and yard saling on Saturdays, all for the love of you.
Dad we’re sure that heaven has the very best yard sales and fishing – until we meet again dear one.
