CLINE: Richard John “Dick” – passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 9, 2023 at the Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home, Simcoe, Dick Cline of Port Rowan, formerly of Cambridge in his 89th year.
Beloved husband of the late Jean Cline (Charter) who predeceased him on January 17, 2018. Loving father of Elizabeth & husband Don Beveridge of Burlington, Eric Cline, of Simcoe and Catherine & husband Jay Marteniuk of Kitchener. Special Papa to Celina, Quin & Shawn, Sydney and Jayme.
Predeceased by his parents Al & Vera (Pake) Cline and sisters, Austa (Goodrich) Macklam & Eric, Vita (Goodrich) & Johnny Wynarski. Survived by his brother Ron and Sheila Cline, sister in-law Alva (Greenslade) Charter and several nieces and nephews.
Dick left his home town of Brighton Ontario at the age of 15 and lived at the YMCA. He drove an ambulance and was told by his superiors that due to his kind and gentle nature he should consider becoming a funeral director. Dick became a licensed funeral director in 1957 and began his career at Dodsworth & Brown in Burlington and then went to work at Southall Funeral Home which he purchased shortly after. Wanting to manage and own a larger operation, he then moved his family to Preston (Cambridge) to work at Ratz & Bechtel Funeral Home in Kitchener, which he purchased in 1972. Dick was fortunate to have had a very dedicated, loyal, and hard working staff and with his vision the funeral home became a thriving entity. In 1978, he was invited to join National Selected Morticians (NSM), an association founded in 1917, dedicated to innovation and excellence in funeral service. Dick became a valuable contributor to NSM and the independent funeral homes it served, eventually becoming Secretary Treasurer in 1984. He went on to have shared ownership and helped manage several funeral homes throughout Ontario and finally retired in 1995.
Long Point was always very special to Dick and Jean, having spent a great deal of time there over the course of their lives so they moved to the inner bay in Port Rowan in 2002. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of the Bluff Club in the 80’s. He was an avid collector of duck decoys, wildlife art, antiques and loved woodworking. He was a voracious reader of all genres but enjoyed historical biographies, especially those about Winston Churchill.
Dick was a man of deep faith, belonging to St. Paul’s United Church in Preston from 1970 to 1985, the Community Church in Port Rowan from 2002 to 2017 and became a beloved member of the Cultus United Church in 2018.
Papa, we will miss your infectious laugh, your funny stories and that special brand of “sass” that you always delivered with love. We take comfort in knowing you are with the many special friends and family who have predeceased you and of course your little dog Maggie.
Dick’s family would like to say a very special thank you to the PSW’s and friends that took such good care of him, allowing him to remain at home during the pandemic. The wonderful staff at the Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home who provided such incredible care for Dick. Thank you to Dr. Wynveen, Dr Kumanovski, Dr. Hambly and Dr. Bobby for their incredible care.
Relatives and friends will be received in the Jeffrey W. Glendinning Funeral Home, 36 Front St. Port Rowan on Saturday, August 26, 2023 from 11:00am until 1:45pm followed by the Memorial Service in the Clark Chapel at 2:00pm. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Ducks Unlimited Canada would be greatly appreciated by the family. Personal condolences can be posted at www.gffh.ca.
