Reverend Deirdre Susan Roach (Baker)
February 5, 1945 – June 30, 2023
The family announces with great sorrow her passing on Friday June 30, 2023, at the age of 78, with her husband Robbie by her side.
Deirdre lived a beautiful, meaningful life filled with love, books, and many happy memories. Her husband and best friend, Robert, adored her and together they raised and taught their children, Jamie, Andrew, and Sarah Jane integrity, loyalty, and compassion and to be strong, loving influences on the people in their lives.
She is survived by her husband, Robert, sons, Jamie (Karen) and Andrew (Gabriela) and daughter Sarah Jane (Malcom). Deirdre (Nana) never missed an opportunity to brag about all four of her beautiful grandchildren Taylor (Andrew), Sam (Kayla), Irene, and Roberta. They were the light of her life. She is also survived by her sisters Brenda and Margo (Butch), her brother-in-law Doug, as well as many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents Glen and Katherine, her parents-in-law Sam and Irene, and her brother and sister-in-law Barry and Miriam.
Born and raised in New Liskeard, Deirdre also spent many of her childhood summers on her Uncle Lorne and Auntie Dot’s farm in South Porcupine. After completing teacher’s college in North Bay in 1964, she returned to South Porcupine and Timmins to start her teaching career. In January 1965, she met the love of her life, Robbie.
Deirdre was a dedicated teacher, a natural librarian, and the best Trivial Pursuit partner one could have. She achieved her bachelor’s degree while working and raising a family. She worked with the Federation of Women’s Teachers Association and volunteered with the Alzheimer’s Society, the Timmins Library Board and the Lord’s Kitchen. When not busy, she was reading.
In 1998, she retired from teaching but wasn’t done yet. She decided to go back to school and in 2001 started classes at Trinity College at the University of Toronto, graduating in 2004 with a Master’s degree in Divinity. Deirdre returned to Timmins and worked as Director of Pastoral Care at the Timmins and District Hospital.
She also continued to work helping and serving people in the diocese of Moosonee and in 2009 was ordained as a Minister in the Anglican church.
With her husband, children, and grandchildren by her side, she battled and defeated breast cancer three times.
To say that her family and friends will miss her greatly is a huge understatement. Our hearts are broken by this loss. Deirdre was an extraordinarily strong woman and has taught all of us to be strong, resilient individuals and to fill every moment we have with love and laughter.
Please take some time this summer and do as Deirdre would love you to do and read a good book!
Cremation has taken place. Arrangements have been entrusted with LESSARD-STEPHENS Funeral Home. In her memory, donations can be made to the Timmins District Hospital Foundation. Online condolences and donations can be made at www.lessardstephens.com
