Obituary of Phyllis Alderdice
Phyllis Anne Alderdice was born on July 27, 1941 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to parents Bob and Lavina Zimmer.
Phyllis attended school in Hardisty, AB to grade 11. Following school, she spent a year helping at home, after which she spent time in Edmonton continuing her education and working.
She married Harold Alderdice on April 21, 1960, and they made their home just south of Hardisty where their three children, Douglas, David, and Cindy, were born.
In the fall of 1966, the family moved to a farm southwest of Amisk. This house was used as a voting station, which Mom helped to run when elections took place.
When her children started school, she rejoined the workforce to help make ends
meet. She worked for a short while in the Hardisty Hospital, then started working at Hi Grade Feeders, where she made many lifelong friends. She continued to work there until her children were all finished high school.
Phyllis was very active with the Hardisty Light Horse Club for many years. This club hosted horse shows, the members went on mountain trail rides and, of course, put on the Hardisty Stampede. For a few years she served as secretary treasurer, which turned our kitchen table and phone line into the Stampede office, while Mom took rodeo entries, organized prize money, and all things clerical for the Rodeo that needed doing.
Around 1977 she helped Harold put together a pony chuckwagon outfit and raced both wagon and cart for a few years. This time was enjoyed very much, not only for the racing, but the people they met and visited with as well.
There were always horses around on the farm and they were enjoyed in one activity or another. “Some of the most enjoyable times were getting together with friends and family for a day ride. Stopping for lunch and wiener roasts and all those good things we did on rides.”
Phyllis loved going to Mexico, and took many winter trips there, sometimes with her sister and sometimes on her own. In her later years, she spent many hours crocheting and doing other handy work to keep her hands and mind active. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren all have keepsakes from her efforts.
Phyllis loved visits from all her family. She was especially happy when the great grand kids came to see Great Granma one-leg; she would let them sit on her lap and “Drive” her wheelchair and would always spoil them with treats.
Phyllis fought a long hard battle with both Scleroderma, Raynaud’s and other autoimmune disorders.
Phyllis passed away on April 14, 2023, at St Mary’s Hospital, Camrose, AB.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold Alderdice, parents Bob and Lavina Zimmer, sister and brother-in-law Lorna and Rodney Alderdice, brother Lloyd Zimmer, and son-in-law Matthew Ference.
She is survived by her three children: Douglas Alderdice, David Alderdice, and Cindy (Wade) Campbell as well as her grandchildren Tonni (Devin) Ollenberger, Cody (Alicja) Ference, and great grandchildren Benjamin, Lyra, Dominik, Gabriela, and Oliwer, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
In honoring Phyllis’s wishes, a private family service will be held at graveside. The family requests that memorial contributions can be made in Phyllis’s honor to Scleroderma Canada.
