Peter (Sonny) Landry – Arichat, formally West Poulamon
With much sorrow, we regret to announce that Sonny Landry passed away peacefully on June 13, 2023, at the St. Anne Centre in Arichat, a stone’s-throw away from the ocean, the church, and the school where he spent most of his career. Though his final years were challenging, he will always be remembered as a fun-loving family man whose smile lit up a room.
Born to the late Frank and Gladys (Petitpas) Landry in 1952, Sonny was the youngest of four children born into a family filled with love, music, and laughter. After his mother passed, Frankie re-married, and his late stepmother, Cecile Landry, became a beloved part of his family.
After a brief stint doing hard labour with the Power Commission, Sonny decided that a different line of work might be a good idea. From St. FX, to Nova Scotia Teachers’ College, and then to several summer schools at UNB, Sonny spent almost 30 years as a Phys. ed. teacher everyone loved. His passion for coaching left those on his teams with the fondest of memories. Though he loved his job, Sonny was quick to offer prayers to all the saints in heaven to the person who invented Velcro, so he could stop tying kids’ shoelaces.
Sonny lived by the credo, “Work Hard, Play Hard”. And play he did! He was the life of any party and found them like a moth finds a flame. His stories, almost all of which were at least partially true, left those around him in stitches, and when is that ever not a welcomed thing?
Aside from his parents, Sonny was predeceased by Lois and Paul’s mother, Margot (Youden) Landry; sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Jerome Benoit; sister-in-law Diane Youden; and niece, Raylene Morykot.
Sonny is survived by his children, Lois Landry and Paul Landry, who live in the homes that were Sonny’s and Frankie and Cecile’s in Poulamon. Joining them to grieve are his son-in-law, Mac MacNeil; sisters, Mathilde Landry and Sr. Annette Landry; brother-in-law Bill Youden; and sister- and brother-in-law Deanie and John Morykot; along with several nieces and nephews and extended family and friends. Though Sonny had enough love for everyone, they all came a distant second in his heart to his beloved grandson, Frankie Currie.
Visitation for the late Sonny Landry will be held at the CH Boudreau Funeral Home on Sunday, June 18, 2023, from 2 pm to 9 pm. Funeral to be held at the Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption Church in Arichat at 11 am on Monday, June 19, 2023. Burial in St. Hyacinth Cemetery in D’Escousse. A reception will be held at the D’Escousse Civic Improvement Society Hall following the burial, where we can pretty much guarantee the telling of tales.
Our family would like to thank the staff at the St. Anne Centre for the excellent care they provided before Sonny’s passing. Donations in Sonny’s name may be made to the St. Anne Centre, Autism Nova Scotia’s Strait Area Chapter, or a charity of choice.
We wish our dad well as he makes his way to the hereafter. We’re sure he’ll be met with warm welcomes from those who went before him. He’ll no doubt make his way to the nearest kitchen party and ask if the fiddler knows “Dan Dougal Daigle’s Farewell to Ecum Secum”. We’re confident his dance card will be full.
