Obituary
Peter Edward Honeyborne September 16, 1957 – August 6, 2023
It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Peter Edward Honeyborne in his 66 th year. After battling stage 4 (colon) cancer for 6 years he passed away at his lakefront home surrounded by those he loved and who loved him.
Predeceased by his parents Donald and Irene, he is survived by his wife Jo-Anne; their children Cameron (Kaitlyn), Lianne, Patrick (Rebecca) and Geoffrey; his grandchildren Lillian, Emily, Oliver and Bryson; his sisters Sheila (Rene), Heather (John) and his brother Brian (Cindy), as well as his nieces, nephews and his great niece.
Peter was born in Kenora Ontario, September 16, 1957, and in 1967 the family moved to North Bay. In 1976 Peter graduated from Chippewa High School. He then attended Canadore College and graduated in 1981 with a Double Major in Accounting and Business Administration. Peter’s love for numbers continued as he pursued his Bachelor of Administration, Major in Accounting, in 1982 from Lakehead University. He began his career at this point becoming an auditor for Price Waterhouse in Calgary until 1984 when he moved to Toronto to work for Montreal Trust. The year 1987 was a busy one for him as he received his CMA (Certified Management Accountant Designation) and began his career with the City of Brampton. While working full-time he continued his studies and received his MBA (Masters in Business Administration) with a major in ITM (Information Technology Management) in 2004 from Athabasca University. He received his CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant Designation) in 2014.
Peter retired from his position as Chief Financial Officer (Treasurer) for the City of Brampton in 2016.
Peter embraced life with enthusiasm, energy and enjoyment. He loved to research things and used his Blackberry – yes, he still had one! to – find the answers he needed. This worked out perfectly because he was the ultimate planner – even from a young age when he’d convinced his childhood friend to help him collect 100’s of bottle caps for some great idea he had, to finding the best driving route from A to B on a vacation, keeping a list of all the things to see along the way and even when it came time for he and Jo-Anne to build their lakefront retirement home. Peter knew what he wanted, researched his options and then made a plan to accomplish it.
Peter shared his love of the outdoors and of fishing with his wife Jo-Anne and much of their spare time was camping, fishing, spending time at their vacation home in Florida, downhill skiing, hiking and then later on at Balsam Lake where they built their retirement home, searching for that elusive great catch or just soaking up the warmth and sunshine. Peter passed on that sense of wonder and joy to his grandchildren and now one of their favorite places to be is up at Papa Pete and Gramma Jo’s Lake House.
Peter always believed that life is about choices and when faced with adversity we can choose to be either positive or negative in our reactions. Peter chose to be positive and to continue to look on the bright side of things even when the cancer was beating him, because being negative was not in his nature.
His passing has left a huge hole in our lives, but Peter died as he lived, with dignity, courage and pride.
