Obituary
PAUL SWEET
Paul William Sweet passed away peacefully from Alzheimer’s on February 2, 2023.
Born November 16, 1957 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Paul was the son of the late William and Helen Sweet, and brother to Cindi. A loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Paul is survived by his wife of 41 years Bev; son, Adam (Katherine); daughter, Brianna (Brandon) Rosenthal; and his three grandchildren, Jack Sweet, Henry and William Rosenthal.
Mere hours after getting married on August 15 ,1981, Paul & Bev hopped in a little Ford Mustang and made the trek to Wetaskiwin, Alberta – the beginning of a lifelong journey of love and adventure. Whether through annual summer trips home to the cottage, traveling with the wind in his sails on the West Coast and tropical beaches or just spending time playing with his three grandsons, Paul lived his life following the guidance of his favourite artist James Taylor who sang; “the secret of life is enjoying the passage of time”.
Known as “Sweet” by the thousands of people whose lives he touched, whether through music, sport, or time in the classroom, Paul was a firm believer that lives were made better when people came together – in music, in spirited debate, or in expanding your horizons through exploring the world.
Paul proudly taught for 38 years in Wetaskiwin, seeking to instill his love of music, sport, and lifelong learning. As one who was not great in school growing up, Paul believed every student should be given the opportunity to develop their potential in whatever their passions might be. This often meant traveling the world with Paul and Bev’s 125 closest teenage ‘friends’ through the WCHS music program that they led together.
While these things were important to Paul, what he valued most in life was spending time with his two children, performing music, fishing, hiking, and skiing in the Rocky Mountains.
Bev, Adam, and Brianna want to say a special thank you to the staff at Memory Lane in Camrose for their care and kindness, and for the many friends and family who have supported them through the years.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date, with lots of laughter, music, and storytelling, as Paul would have wanted. In lieu of flowers, Paul asked that any donations be made to the Music Therapy Program at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, through the following online link:
