Obituary
Pat Murphy passed away peacefully with his family by his side on January 14, 2023 at 84 years of age. He was born on March 7, 1938 in Moncton and was a life time resident of the City of Moncton.
Pat was the son of the late Fred and Agnes Murphy (Murray).
He is also survived by sisters Anne Caddell, Saint John; Bernie VanBuskirk (Gary) and Maureen Murphy (Bill) of Moncton; brothers Danny (Claudette), John (Rose) and Kevin of Moncton, and sister-in-law Theresa) of Omaha, Sherrill of Kentville. In addition, he had many uncles, aunts, nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by his parents Fred and Agnes (Murray) and sister Joan, brothers Raymond, Hubert, Greg, Neil, Dave, his mother and father-in-law Doris and Howie Melanson, sister-in-law Sandy Murphy and brother-in-law Jim Caddell.
He was employed with Sumner Plumbing throughout his working career. He held several increasingly responsible positions including Vice-President/General Manager for the Atlantic region at the time of his semi-retirement in 1997. He continued to work until he fully retired in 2003 after 46 years of service with the company.
He was an Honourary Life Member of CIPH (Canadian Institute of Plumbing & Heating) and served as the Atlantic Region President on two occasions.
Pat attended Saint Bernard’s, Mountain Road and Moncton High School and graduated in 1957. While in school he was a newspaper carrier for the Moncton Transcript (7 years) and received an award of Honour from the Canadian Circulation Managers’ Association on October 8, 1955 and also was awarded a Scholarship upon graduation in 1957 from the Moncton Transcript.
Pat was an avid hockey and baseball fan and in his younger days, played and coached softball and basketball teams. It was in the game of basketball that he enjoyed the most as a player and referee. He was awarded the Wink Wilcox Award of Merit by the Canadian Association of Basketball Officials for his outstanding contributions to basketball and basketball officiating. He also served as chairman of the Moncton Hoop Classic in 1988, was inducted into the Moncton Wall of Fame in 2006 (Builder Basketball) and 2013 as a member of the CY-Hi/CYO Basketball Team of 1957-1959. He was also honored with a Honorary Lifetime Membership in 2015 to the New Brunswick Association of Approved Basketball Officials for long and outstanding service to the game of basketball in New Brunswick.
Pat enjoyed playing golf during his retirement and was a past member of Lakeside Golf and Country Club. He also enjoyed camping and was a member and president of the Moncton Trailers 68 and Citation Indians Trailer Clubs. He was also a lifetime member of the Moncton Press Club.
He loved his family dearly. From holiday gatherings to the annual lobster boil, he was happiest when family was near. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife, Claire (Melanson) of 63 years, children Brian (Karen) of Waverley, NS; Wendy Peters (Rusty) of Moncton and Tracey MacAllister (Terry) of Cambridge, Ontario along with grandchildren Allison, Joshua, Meaghan, Kerri, Erin and Ryan and great grandsons Yanick and Félix Patrick.
The family would like to thank the Oncology and Palliative Care departments at the Moncton Hospital for the care and compassion they have shown during this time.
Visitation for relatives and friends will be held from Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Thursday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral Mass to be celebrated at St. Augustine’s Roman Catholic Church (340 Dominion St.) on Friday, January 20, 2023 at 12:00 pm with Rev. Angus Johnston presiding. Reception to follow in the Parish Hall. Interment to be held in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Dieppe, at a later date.
