Obituary
HENDERSON, Patricia Joy (nee Gibson)
Born in Toronto on August 21, 1928 died in Peterborough August 20th 2023. 12 hours before her 95th Birthday.
Pat was predeceased by the love of her life Marshall (Miff) Henderson. Loving mother of Steve (Maureen) of Peterborough and Christine Fitts (Robert) of Ottawa, and the adoring and adored grandmother of Jonathan ( Shay ), Jacqueline ( Andy), Devin , Jacob and Marissa ( Austin ). Pat was predeceased by her parents Nellie and William Gibson and is survived by her brother Robert Gibson of Gilford, Ontario.
Those who know Pat understand the world has lost a smart, funny, gracious and loving soul.
Pat’s life was marked by resilience and strength of character, making her an inspiration to family and friends alike. She grew up in Toronto during the depression and moved to Ottawa during the second world war, yet always looked for ways to wring joy out of every situation. Pat loved to dance, and often shared stories of riding the Britannia streetcar to the “edge of town” to dance at the Pavilion on Saturday nights. While working at E.B. Eddy, she was delighted to dance in the employee show “Only One Revue”.
Pat and Marshall were married in 1957 and moved to Peterborough in the early sixties to raise their family.
Pat loved people and collected friends wherever she went. When she joined the Peterborough County City Health Unit, she met some of her closest and best friends – a group of likeminded people who never passed up an opportunity to celebrate an occasion together. When Pat lost her husband far too early in 1981, this group of friends truly sustained her.
Pat returned to her love of dancing enrolling in tap classes and ultimately joining a line dancing group who entertained groups around the province.
Pat was not able to attend university after high school. She threw herself into that challenge as retirement approached and graduated from Trent University with a Bachelor of Arts in English at the age of 72, with all her grandchildren in attendance.
Pat was an extraordinary grandmother, loving each of her grandchildren for their unique personalities and always thinking of ways to engage with them and enrich their bond.
Red Pine Camp held a special place in Pat’s heart. For more than seven decades, Pat was part of the Red Pine family, sharing happy times and shenanigans with dear family and friends from around the world.
Pat’s passing leaves us deeply sad but truly grateful for her presence in our lives.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada or a charity of your choosing.
A visitation will take place on Saturday August 26 from 2 to 4 pm. At Highland park Funeral Centre, 2510 Bensfort Road, Peterborough.
A celebration of life will take place on Sunday August 27 at 1pm in the Highland Park Funeral Centre Chapel.
