At 11.30 pm, on August 5, 2023, the world lost a ray of light. After battling quadriplegia and its accompanying complications, Norman Richard Rolf Meyer knew that further battle was futile, and he bravely acquiesced and left this world on his own terms, surrounded by love at the age of 57. Norm was born in Edmonton on March 25 1966 and grew up in Devon, Alberta. He was a solid, loyal friend, and a staunch supporter of the people he loved. Norm was a natural and avid athlete as a teenager. He was a muscle car buff, and could build or fix almost anything. He possessed a strong work ethic and worked hard as an electrician and a painter, and found his niche doing carpentry in the oil industry, until life as he knew it was stolen from him by violence in 1995. He defied the odds then, and time and time again as his body began to break down. He built a life for himself despite the odds, and truly was loved by those lucky enough to know him. Norm lived the last several years at the Good Samaritan Millwoods and was an active participant in facility programs. He helped new residents feel welcome and prepare them for the realities of their new in life long-term care with kindness and honesty.
The previous months saw Norm’s health began to decline more rapidly, spending more and more time in the Grey Nuns Hospital for various issues. Many of the health team members there always remembered him by name, both from previous and more recent hospital stays and always commented on what a pleasure he was to work with. Norm was quiet and unassuming, and had a significant, positive impact on many people. He was a movie buff, he loved music, electronics, muscle cars, hats and tattoos. Norm always helped the people around him and was a fierce protector, giving unwaivering love and loyalty to those fortunate enough to be in his small circle. While being given end-of-life-care, he wanted to make sure we all ate, and he cracked jokes with the nursing staff to make them laugh. Norm’s kindness and sense of humour were intact right to the end. He was a true warrior.
Norm is survived by his two children; Justin and Cassandra of British Columbia; his parents, Rolf and Lynda of Devon; brother Paul (Sarah) of Edmonton and their 3 children; ex-wife and close confidant of 30 years, Lisa of Beaumont; Lisa’s nieces and nephew’s of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and BC; her sister and brother of Edmonton, and his extended family and a few special friends.
You made an immense difference in many lives and had a profound impact on so many people, Norm. Your legacy is one of love, generosity & strength, and we will forever both cherish and honour your memory.
You can rest now, dear man. The battles you fought with your head held high are over. We will always love you with all our hearts, and miss you with everything have.
