Neil Samuel Freake
June 5, 1950 – June 19, 2023
The family of Neil Samuel Freake are saddened to announce his unexpected passing on June 19th, 2023, at Western Memorial Regional Hospital. He had just celebrated his 73rd birthday two weeks prior.
Neil is predeceased by his parents, Hubert and Agnes. He is survived by his wife, Judith, with whom he recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. Also celebrating his life are his children, Cory (Karen), Cynthia (Trevor), Cathy (Chris), Christopher (Amanda), and their families. His siblings Hubert (Karen), Maureen (Cliff), and Elaine (Earl), as well as a large circle of extended family and friends, will continue to think of him fondly.
Neil loved his family and knew no greater pride than his grandchildren. Pop’s biggest sources of happiness were Zachary, Jillian, Jocelyn, Zoe, Samuel, Jack, Sarah, Benson, Joel, Elliott, and Jane.
Neil grew up in Botwood, NL, but eventually settled in Deer Lake with his family, where he practiced his craft as a carpenter. While living in Deer Lake, he was an active member of the community. He ran his own construction company and was renowned for his integrity and workmanship. Even after retirement, he was considered a mentor in the profession, and many local builders who crossed his path have found themselves asking, “What would Neil do?”
After his children were grown, he aided his wife in operating a Bed & Breakfast out of their family home. During this venture, he enjoyed meeting new people and promoting Newfoundland and Labrador through stories and music. Guests seemed to appreciate his ability to make them feel welcomed in the province that he was so proud of.
Neil had a deep love for the outdoors, history, woodworking, humour and, most of all, music. He was an accomplished musician and frequently performed at the United Church and at many other local functions. His music was enjoyed by family, friends, and strangers (who became friends). His musical talent was undeniable as he was known to pick up almost any instrument and play it as if he had done so for years. This gift enabled him to bring great comfort to others during both good times and sad.
Neil’s second home was the St. Paul’s United Church, where he was a familiar face as a member of the congregation and the choir. In addition to his contribution during Sunday morning services, he had no hesitation in dedicating countless hours to the church through his handiwork and musical talent.
Neil is remembered by his family and friends as a hardworking, generous, passionate, gentle, and kind man. His sense of humour was second to none. He loved a big laugh and appreciated a good joke – even if it was self-deprecating.
A special thanks to Judy’s family for their ongoing care and support during this time of need, especially Colleen, Reg, Paulette, and Barry. Special acknowledgment is directed to those who have travelled great distances to spend time with Neil and his family during his final days. The family would also like to thank all who provided meals, as we know food held a special place in Neil’s heart and belly.
Lastly, Neil’s family would like to send thanks to the Western Memorial Regional Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit Medical staff for their care during the last week.
A visitation for family and friends will be held at St. Paul’s United Church, 17 Spruce Street, Deer Lake, NL on Friday, June 23, 2023, from the hours of 7-9 pm, where also a celebration of Neil’s life will take place on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at 2 pm with Rev. Tony Newell officiating. Interment will follow at the Deer Lake Interdenominational Cemetery on Wight’s Road.
