It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Neil Richards, announce his passing. Neil passed away peacefully in the company of his adoring family on January 9, 2023.
Predeceased by his cherished parents Charles and Bridget; his brother Todd (Shirley); and his sister Wanda (Laura).
Neil leaves to mourn with broken hearts his wife, Sharon- The love his life; his children Stephanie (Ryan), Sarah and Jason; his grandchildren Lily and Alyssa; his sister Lynn; his brothers Glenn (CarolAnn) and Jerome (Jackie); his nephews Stephen, Matthew Haynes, Andrew, Bradley, Robin, Colin, Matthew Richards and Michael; his nieces Mallory, Mia, Reese and Kristen; his mother and father in-laws Daphne, Clarence and Bob; his sister and brother in-laws Paula (Tom), Angie (Terry), and Chris as well as many more beloved family members, friends and co- workers.
Neil was born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland. He spent his childhood watching hockey, singing (both in and out of choir) and playing every sport that he could with many close friends and siblings at their home base, Gear Street.
He also spent much of his time on the soccer field with his brothers Glenn and Jerome, playing for St. Pats, the Holy Cross Crusaders and the Celtics. It was through soccer that he made many lifelong friends, and he continued playing and coaching the sport into adulthood.
In 1988, Neil married the love of his life, Sharon. They went on to have 3 children, and later on, 2 granddaughters that he loved with all of his heart. Being a devoted husband, father and grandfather was a big source of pride and taking care of his loved ones brought so much joy and fulling purpose to his life.
Neil spent his adult life working primarily for the St. John’s City Depot as well as Cowan Heights United Church.
Neil was a loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend. He was a hard worker and always helped his friends and family with their various handyman needs. No matter how busy Neil was, there was always time found to help in any way that he was able if there was a need.
He was honest, loyal and fair.
He was an outstanding father and husband – never shying away from jumping in with both feet when it came to helping his kids with their homework, with the cooking and cleaning, playing with his kids, or being a provider and shoulder for his beloved wife. He had an amazing sense of humour- his “dad jokes”, sharp wits, playfulness and practical jokes will be remembered fondly forever.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the nurses, doctors and staff for their care and devotion to keeping him well and with us over the years. In particular, thank you to the nurses and staff at the West End Clinic, Dr. Whalen and his team as well as the team at 4 West- St .Clare’s Mercy Hospital for your dedication and caring for Neil and his hurting family in his final days.
