On Friday August 18th, Myrt Tiberghien, loving Mother and Grandma, passed away at the age of 91.
She was predeceased by her Mother Ivy; her father Harry; her brothers George, Bob and Don Wilson; and her husband Walter Tiberghien.
Myrt played a special part in many lives. Wife of 41 years to Walter; loving Mother to Terry (Linda) and Glenn; steadfast Mom (in law and in heart) to Laurie Kenley (Barry); “Queen of tickles and pickles” Grandma to Amy (Shane) and Curtis; GREAT Grandma to Liam and Winnie; and she had a great fondness and bond with many Nieces and Nephews.
Myrt was born on January 22, 1932 in Calgary, Alberta to Ivy and Harry Wilson. She grew up in Calgary alongside her three brothers. Small but mighty, Myrt dominated the basketball court for Western Canada High School. She was proud to be a Wilson and proud of her Scottish heritage. During her time working at Dominion Oilfield Supply, she met Walter Tiberghien and they were married in 1956. Soon after came the two apples of her eye, Terry and Glenn.
The family did their growing up in Fairview. Myrt genuinely appreciated her neighbours, many of whom became lifelong friends, and was active in the Fairview community. She watched many hockey and lacrosse games as her boys grew up and then later in life as Walt played old timers hockey. She volunteered her time at her Grandkids elementary school and had a love of all animals.
She was happiest in the garden, and known for her dill pickles. Her wit was sharp, and she could crack a joke like no other and would often barely get the punchline out between fits of laughter. She liked cards, and board games and spent lots of time at Acadia Pool doing aquasize and deep water running. Myrt was a very talented crafter, knitting her grandkids sweaters, mitts and toques. She made all kinds of crafts and was a talented cross stitcher. She enjoyed years of family campouts and spent many winters being a snowbird. She liked to travel which may have started with a trip to New York shortly after her high school graduation. She travelled on many family trips. She cruised to New Orleans, basket weaved in Jamaica, watched her Granddaughter get married in the Dominican Republic and relaxed oceanside in Maui. She was fond of watching hockey, reading, and doing (and finishing) the daily crossword. She made an unparalleled birthday cake and was a talented but humble baker. In her 70s, Myrt started taking piano lessons. Although she lost her beloved husband 26 years ago, she remained fiercely and proudly independent.
She raised two amazing boys. Talented, loving, dedicated, hard workers. They became men who role model selflessness, kindness and compassion. Well respected men who exemplify the importance of family and love. Whose dedication to their mother gave her the relief of knowing she would have companionship on the walk home. Her legacy is in them and what they have taught their children, and niece and nephew about how you show up for the people you love most in this world. She was the healing glue that brought us together, and showed us what was most important in the end.
You are welcome to join the family for a casual open house (casual dress) on Sunday September 10th from 1-3 at the Willowridge Community Centre (680 Acadia Drive SE Calgary).
