Obituary
We are grateful that Maureen was with us for 90 wonderful years. Her passing was peaceful, on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 with her children Susan and Brian by her side. We would like to thank Mount Nemo Christian Nursing Home staff and volunteers who cared for Maureen over the past two years. She will be missed by her daughter Susan (David) and her son Brian (Sue) and her four grandchildren Ian, Graham, Jillian and Nathan.
Maureen was born in England emigrating to Canada in 1956 at the age of 23 on the S/S Empress of Britain eventually settling in Toronto. She moved to the Toronto Islands and spent many years there, playing a major role in preserving the threatened community and was one of the founders and Chairman of the Toronto Island Resident Association which started her long involvement in activism and volunteering. This was on top of raising two small children as well as working as the librarian at the Island Public School.
In 1982 she joined her first hike with the Toronto Bruce Trail Club beginning a very long relationship with the Bruce Trail. This led her to numerous backpacking adventures including the Grand Canyon, Australia, New Zealand, Greece, Hawaii, Italy and of course the end-to-end Bruce Trail milestone.
In 1999 Maureen moved to Georgetown and founded the Halton Hills Chapter of the Toronto Bruce Trail Club along with other executive roles within the organization. With such a large contribution and involvement, a section of the Bruce Trail that runs through Scottsdale farm, near Georgetown, has been named after her.
