Obituary for
Mary E. “Bette” Woodhead (née MacGillivray)
Mary E. “Bette” Woodhead (née MacGillivray) passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at the age of 91 years.
Bette is survived by cousins throughout the world and innumerable good friends.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Brian H Woodhead (Jan. 27, 2015); and parents, William and Marion MacGillivray (née MacGougan).
Having no children of her own, Bette cherished her role as second “Mom” and confidante to many children and grandchildren of her friends and neighbours.
Bette was a proud graduate (1953) of the Royal Alexandra Hospital School of Nursing, a founding member of the Riverbend United Church and the “Wednesday Walkers” women’s fellowship group, an integral part of the Brookside/Riverbend community since 1970 and supporter of many charitable organizations.
Bette expressed deep gratitude for the love and support provided by her closest friends and neighbours throughout her life and for the special care and advocacy she received during her final months.
To experience Bette’s essence, be positive and pragmatic, be engaged and get involved, go for a walk, have a garden, call a friend, read a book, encourage a child, help others less fortunate, have a glass of wine at 5, eat well, repeat.
Cremation has taken place and it was Bette’s wish that there be no funeral service. A memorial bench in Bette’s name will be placed in Fort Edmonton Park, if allowed, or in the Brookside Community.
Memorial donations would be appreciated to a local charity of choice or to the Edmonton Community Foundation for the “Brian & Bette Woodhead Fund”, a fund created by Bette to enhance the quality of life of those living in difficult circumstances in the greater Edmonton area.
