MIDDAGH, Marjorie
1935 – 2023
Marjorie Lorraine ‘Marj’ Middagh (nee Dunham) of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away peacefully on the morning of Friday, May 12, 2023, at the age of 88 years. Marj was born in Olds, Alberta. After finishing High School, she went on to the University of Saskatchewan, where she met and married William ‘Bill’ Ronald Middagh. They went on to have three daughters, and many adventures, while living in several places around the globe. From Denmark and England, to Australia, to van-life travelling with small children around Europe, and the Middle East. She was always community minded. Settling in Fort Saskatchewan with three young girls, and noting an absence of activities for them, Marj formed the local Figure Skating Club, persuading the local Hockey Clubs to give up their prime Saturday morning ice time for it. She formed a Girl’s Baseball Club and coached them, despite not even knowing all the rules of the game. Marj also taught Sunday School. She was active at all levels of politics and served for several terms on the local Council. Marj was also known for creating and hosting a local a cable TV show called “Focus on Fort Saskatchewan”. When her daughters got a little older, she went back to college and went on to have a successful Real Estate and Property Management Career. Marj lived her life fully; she had a lightening quick wit and a ready laugh. She was well-mannered and proper, but she could also be wildly irreverent. She had a rare ability to see humanity in others and could connect with people from all backgrounds. She was stubbornly independent and as such, was a good female role model. She painted her own houses inside and out; DIY’d her own house repairs, sewed everything from doll clothes to full outfits for herself and her children, to years’ worth of figure skating costumes; made loads of pickles, preserves, jams and jellies; and was ever adventurous in the kitchen. Some of her many passions included playing bridge, gardening and flowers, politics and news, book clubs, toastmasters, and crossword puzzles. Marjorie will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Karen Lynn (Rick), Brenda Lee (Paul) and Diane Ruth (Dariusz); her grandchildren, Spencer, Hannah, Garth, Beth, and Ursula; her great grandchildren, Lochland and Meryl; her sister, Marian; her brother-in-law, James (Karren); her nieces and nephews; and many other friends and family members. A Memorial Celebration will be held at the Parkland Funeral Home, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, June 24, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if desired, Memorial Donations in Marj’s honor may be made directly to www.plancanada.ca “Gifts of Hope”. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed at www.parklandfuneralhome.com. Arrangements in care of Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium, 6287 – 67 A Street (Taylor Drive), Red Deer. 403.340.4040.
