Obituary of Marilyn Joyce Cook
COOK, Marilyn Joyce of Saint John, New Brunswick, passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at Tucker Hall, Shannex, Saint John.
Marilyn was predeceased by her devoted husband of 65 years, John. She is survived by her daughter Beverly McAlpine (Al) and her son Paul (Debbie), both of the greater Saint John area. She had three very special granddaughters, Emily and Lauren Cook, and Hannah McAlpine. Her family and friends brought her great happiness, and she was always doing thoughtful things to help.
Marilyn was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1935, the daughter of the late Ralph and Margaret (nee Joyce) Myles. Her early years were spent in Moncton where she attended Aberdeen School and Moncton High School. Following high school Marilyn completed a business course at Mount Allison University and began working for the Department of Veterans Affairs for five years.
Marilyn and John were married in Moncton in May of 1957 and shortly after moved to Saint John. She attended the Anglican Church in Millidgeville for many years. She was interested in the Hospice concept and became a volunteer and supporter of Hospice Saint John beginning in 1985.
Marilyn enjoyed friendships going back many years with childhood friends, with whom she kept in touch, and later a special group of girls in The Book Club, as well as neighbours on Bedell Avenue. Vacations were special family times, spent camping in Bar Harbor and several weeks a year in Ogunquit, Maine. There were many indulged cats over the years ( including some strays) and one special Cocker Spaniel, Genny.
Special thanks to the staff of Carleton Hall, Howe Hall and Tucker Hall who took such good care of her, and to her friend / nurse Michelle at Howe Hall. To all of you, it means so much.
By Marilyn’s request, there will be no public visitation or funeral. A Private Family Committal Service will take place in Trinity Church Cemetery, Sus Corner. Arrangements entrusted to Brenan’s Funeral Home (506-634-7424). Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.BrenansFH.com.
Remembrances, if so inclined, may be made to the Hospice of Greater Saint John, Animal Rescue League, or the charity of one’s choice.
