Obituary
It is with sadness but many wonderful memories that we announce the passing of Marie Theresa Marrie aged 86, from Mount Carmel, Stephenville and St. John’s. After living with Parkinson’s for over 30 years, she decided it was time to join her favourite person. These last few days, she was surrounded by her children and grandchildren at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, which is where she called home for over 11 years and came to call many of her caregivers family.
Marie was predeceased by her husband, Richard Marrie (2012). Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are her children; Cathy Puddister, Patrick Marrie, Lucy Marrie (Rod Dupras), Annette Hodder (Darryl) and Sandra Williams (Cyril), nine grandchildren; Jessica, Evan and Andrew Puddister, Nicholas and Lucas Marrie, Ryan and Jenny Hodder, Bradly Dunne and Clara Williams. Also leaving to mourn is her only sibling, Dermot (Clare) Nolan and family. The Marrie families and a circle of friends, especially Eleanor Nolan, who has been the greatest friend.
Marie was educated as a teacher at Littledale College but finished her Bachelor of Education and Special Education Degrees at Memorial University in later years through evening courses and summer school. This was accomplished, with five children underfoot only because of her tenacity and the support of her devoted husband. She began her career in teaching in St. Mary’s Bay and continued in Stephenville in 1978, retiring in 1990. Marie had a great fondness for working with special needs children. Her greatest source of joy and laughter was her husband Dick who treated her like a princess; she has missed him tremendously since his passing. His last words to her were, “I will go on ahead and get the place ready for us”. Well, we know that she is in good hands again. She lived a simple life with simple pleasures such as the love she had for her husband, children and grandchildren. She was a woman of few words, great faith and loved nothing more than being surrounded by family, listening to their stories.
The family extends a sincere thank you to the staff of St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, especially 2 North, for their compassion and kindness over the years. Also, a special thank you to the residents of the second floor and their families for their friendship during Marie’s journey and especially Mary Keating and her loving family for their laughter, stories and support for over 8 years.
Resting at Dunphy’s Funeral Home, Holyrood. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 29th from 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
