Margaret Edith, known affectionately as Edie, passed away peacefully with her husband by her side at Saint Vincent Hospital on July 2, 2023. Edie, in her 70th year, was the beloved wife of Jacques for 44 years. She was the devoted mother of Philip (Rayelle), Eric (Caitlin, deceased 2019), and Cynthia. Special Grandma to Jordan, Cali and Max. Dear daughter of the late Bill and Marion Atwell. Edie was a vibrant sister of Jim (deceased 2014)/Liz, Bruce/Carol, Joyce/Bruce (deceased 2003), Elaine/Kerry, Barb/Bart, John/Sharon, and Ian/Diane. Survived by brother-in-law Sebastian/Paulette (deceased 2023) and sister-in-law Geraldine/Ted. Also survived by twenty cherished nieces and nephews. As an extrovert, Edie enjoyed growing up in a large family, and had great love for her extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. She was known for her loud voice, contagious laugh and exuberant personality.
After high school, Edie trained as a Health Care Aid, and was a compassionate, efficient worker in the Perley Hospital for several years. She devoted her time to her family during their formative years. Later she used her abilities for twenty years as an accounting technician for code.ngo, an international literacy non-profit. She found time to enjoy various hobbies, starting with crocheting a table covering for her mother, to the extensive wood projects she completed more recently, among others: a coffee table, jelly cupboards, many Christmas plaques, a planter, a dresser to hold hundred of CDs, and a custom made, built-in library and window seat. Most of the things she made were given to loved ones. By nature she was a giver, whether giving items, or giving time and undivided attention from her heart. It was obvious that people were important to her.
Because of her devout faith in Jesus Christ, she volunteered extensively at her church in the various positions of greeter, mentor, prayer group leader and accounting. Throughout her life, she was an encouraging, empathetic and faithful friend to many, taking their joys and sorrows into her own heart. She was blessed to see many answers to her prayers, from little things such as finding lost jewelry, to the safety of her loved ones despite their being in the midst of a multi-vehicle collision. She acted upon the burdens that God gave her and interceded for each case.
A special thanks to the General Hospital oncology staff for the wonderful care given to Edie during her stay there and our deepest gratitude to Elizabeth Bruyere’s palliative care team for the compassionate devotion they had towards Edie, making sure her stay with them was as comfortable as possible. They treated her with dignity and respect. In lieu of flowers, donations to Elizabeth Bruyere Palliative Care, Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation, and/or code.ngo would be gratefully appreciated.
