It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we, the family of the late Madonna Sophia Hawkins (nee King), announce her peaceful passing surrounded by family after a short courageous battle with Cancer at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital Palliative Care unit at the age of 72 years. Madonna was born April 25, 1951 in Mattis Point to Ralph and Nora King.
She leaves to mourn with fond and loving memories, her husband Gregory; her children: Lloyd (Joselyn), Sheryl (Matthew) and Juanita (Jason) and fur baby Frankie; her grandchildren: Gabrielle, Tristan, Jessica, Jerika and Branson; her great-grandchildren: Jersey and Kinsley; brother Carl (Yvonne) and brother-in-law Robert (Sheila), special friends: Robbie, Mary, Yvonne, Joan; nieces: Nora and Karen and Mama’s girl Lien. Also a large circle of extended family and friends.
Madonna is predeceased by her parents Ralph and Nora King, brothers: Vincent and Joe; sisters: Mary, Marjorie, Mildred, Bertha and Alice.
Madonna was never a stranger to hard work. She worked tirelessly to help support her family, never complaining, as that work may at times took her away from her community and family she loved dearly. Throughout her lifetime she worked as a homemaker, seasonal fishplant worker, a cook and cleaner in later years in Fort Mac. Madonna was a talented knitter, she truly enjoyed giving away her knitted goods to keep many toes and heads warn in Stephenville Crossing, Labrador and Fort Mac. When not knitting she would be found in the kitchen either baking up delicious desserts, cookies, homemade bread or cooking up many feeds for her family and friends and the staff of the dialysis unit in the hospital. She also loved her game of cards, a fierce opponent who loved to win crib. But the most important thing was her family, she was always there to support her children and grandchildren who she loved dearly. She had a heart of gold and was always thinking of others. She will be missed and fondly remembered by many.
At Madonna’s request cremation will take place with no funeral.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Dwyer, the staff at Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital and the dialysis team for their love and compassion and for the great care provided to our mother, especially the wonderful comfort they provided up until her passing.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Palliative Care Unit or Dialysis Unit of Sir Thomas Roddick Hospital, Stephenville, NL. The family would like to thank everyone for their support during their difficult time.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fillatre’s Funeral Home in Stephenville Crossing, NL.
