It is with great sadness that we announce that Ray Mabbett passed away unexpectedly on May 27, 2023, at the age of 76.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Wendy; brother Bruce (Beverly); children Rayna (Dan), Marie (Joel), and Becca (Jade); and grandchildren, Karley, Jacob, Natalie, Tyler, Emily, and Molly. Sadly, he was joined by his son Mike (Lana), early the following day.
Ray was born in New Westminster, BC, to Bruce and Priscilla Mabbett on January 10, 1947. He grew up with a sense of adventure and passion for life. He was an incredibly hard worker and was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back. You may have known him as Ray, X-Ray Ray, Dad, or Grandpa, but he was never Mr. Mabbett.
He loved his family more than anything and was quick to puff out his chest and tell you about all their accomplishments. Not much brought him more joy than delighting in his children and cheering them on in whatever they did. His love also extended out to anyone he encountered, and he quickly made friends wherever he went or worked.
Ray inspired those around him to live each and every moment. He always had a story to share, even if you’d heard it five times before, and he loved to make others laugh. He committed himself fully to whatever he did and forever had something he was doing or working on. When Ray had his mind set on doing something, he chased it hard. He enjoyed staying active and was an avid skier, cyclist, motorcyclist, gym goer, and when he wasn’t doing those things always had a project on the go around the house.
He was deeply committed to his faith in Jesus and focused on living his faith in action. He gave generously of his time, resources, and energy and was a prayer warrior for those he loved.
A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, June 9, 2023, at 4:00 PM, at Springfield Funeral Home, 2020 Springfield Road, Kelowna, BC. At his request, this will be an informal gathering with a short service and refreshments. There will be an open mic opportunity if anyone has any memories, writings, or stories they would like to share (2-3 min). If you are unable to attend in person, please join the family online by Livestream at the time of the service (see below), a recording will be made available to view shortly thereafter.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Cancer Agency, would be most appropriate.
