Obituary
BALL, Lynda Jane
On Tuesday April 25, 2023, at Extendicare Peterborough, Lynda passed into the presence of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in her 90th year. Beloved wife of the late Donald Ball (2018) and treasured mother of Deborah (Stephen) Peel, Lori (the late John) Mackay, Suzanne (Tom) McDonald, Kim Ball, and Andrea (Stephen Barrett) Ball. Much loved Nana Banana to Jonathan, Andrew (Rebecca), and Matthew (Carol) Mackay; Rebecca and Jacquie McDonald; Jacob (Nicole) Olesiuk and Miranda (Daniel) Laflamme; and Michael and Graeme Barrett. Doting Great Nana to Camdyn, Caleb, and Colin Mackay; Luke and Grace Mackay; Owen and Mara (Mackay) and Blair McPherson; and Abigail Olesiuk. Beloved Honorary Nana Banana OG to Aubrey, Greyson, and Marcus.
Lynda was born March 13, 1934, to Glen and Mary Jane (Tanner) Nichols and grew up in the area between Apsley and Coe Hill. She was predeceased by siblings Ruth (John) Rexe, Jean (Frank) Hancock, Mary Lou (Jim) Howitt, Elizabeth (Trevor) Lillico, Philip (Pat) Nichols, and David Nichols, and dear in-laws Shirley and Grant Faulds and Nancy Hawthorne. Survived by caring in-laws Ken Hawthorne, Marilyn Nichols, and Nancy Nichols, and many loved nieces and nephews.
After moving to the big city of Peterborough she met her Donny, marrying in 1953. The Cinq Soeurs followed, and Don and Lynda opened their home to Lynda’s mother, who lived with them for 20 years.
Lynda always welcomed everyone to our house on James Street. A surrogate mom to many, “Helmet” was known for her chocolate chip “homers” and her warm hugs. She took care of neighbours’ children, as well as many nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. She always let people know they were loved. Many friends of her children and grandchildren saw her as a second mother or nana, including Josie and Rowan, Brenda, Angie, Sharon, Chloe, Christina, the James Street and Rogers Street girls, and others.
Before marriage she was involved in amateur theatre; then poetry became a creative outlet, and she also spent time as the Ashburnham neighbourhood correspondent for the Peterborough Examiner. She played Scrabble, Upwords, and Uno with family, and in later years she and Don spent time playing Mexican Train Dominoes and Sequence and had memorable games of Go Fish and Old Maid with beloved grandchildren. She was also a volunteer armchair coach for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Their travels included trips to Florida with in-laws, to Puerto Rico to visit family, to Grand Manan to visit friends, to Sight and Sound in Pennsylvania, and to West Virginia and Ohio to visit a grandson and his family.
Mom’s gift of faith in Christ came to her in midlife and was an integral part of her identity. She was an encourager to many and a prayer warrior. God’s grace and the love of her family sustained her through the trials of life. For several decades Don and Lynda were very involved in the faith community at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, and Lynda was also nurtured by her sisters at Auburn Chapel – Women in the Word – and other faith-encouraging friends. Our family is very appreciative of the loving and supportive direct care staff at Extendicare, especially Doris (deceased), Dee, Amanda, Crystal, Daniel, Erika, and many others who showed her respect and understanding in her last few years. We may not know your name, but Mom was touched by your support. Special thanks to Pauline, who always made her look and feel beautiful, and to the unsung heroes like Marcia, Sara, and Lisa who work the overnight shift. Her life at Extendicare was made richer by the presence of her beloved friend Bernice March.
Visitation will take place Monday, May 1, 2023, from 6:00 to 8:00 P.m. at HIGHLAND PARK FUNERAL CENTRE (2510 Bensfort Rd.). A service of remembrance will take place on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, in the Highland Park Funeral Centre at 11:00 a.m., with luncheon following. Andrew Bowes will be officiating. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mom’s favourite charity: www.wowmission.com (Working for Widows and Orphans) or The Peterborough Extendicare Resident’s Council……. would be appreciated by the family.
