Obituary
With great sadness, the family of the late Louie Zawislak announce his sudden passing on August 21, 2023, at the age of 83 years.Louie was born on December 19, 1939, to Joseph and Ludwina (Derkatch) Zawislak at the family home near Mikado, SK. The second of three children, Louie grew to be a big, strapping, active boy who wasn’t afraid to work and play hard. When he was young, he enjoyed playing hockey and baseball. He attended Mikado School but left to work at a young age due to ailing parents. At the age of 14, Louie was first employed as a gravel truck driver. He continued trucking for many years while learning to operate most other equipment for road construction throughout rural Saskatchewan including his home RM of Sliding Hills. He became an exceptionally skilled operator and could run anything with tires or tracks. Later, he worked for the CO-OP Creamery in Canora, delivering products to stores and restaurants and picking up milk from the dairies. Joanne and Louie were married May 16, 1964. It didn’t take long for them to start their family. They bought a small house near the homestead in Mikado. During this time, CO-OP closed the Canora facility, offering transfers to other locations. Not wanting to move his family, he decided to try his hand at farming the homestead full time. As the family grew, he decided he needed a more stable income. Over the next several years, Louie took up employment at Canora Service, Leson’s Funeral Home, Durafibre, and ended his working years back at the RM of Sliding Hills. Louie spent a lot of time in his shop creating and building with metal. He built equipment and attachments to help Joanne and the kids with the garden and yard work. He was heavily involved with the Mikado Curling Club including building of the “new” rink. Fundraising dances were more fun than work for him and he did his part to help empty the “heels” at the end of the night. Louie loved to hunt and over the years had many great hunting buddies. Countless evenings were spent over supper, recalling stories of the hunt in the bunkhouse. Post hunt came another of his passions, making sausage and smoking it in his own designed and built smokehouse. That smokehouse was also well used by friends and neighbors. He recently built Smokehouse V2 as the original had burned through. Payment for use was a couple coils and at one point they were getting so much sausage they didn’t make any of their own! Louie’s train was something that brought him immense pleasure. His homemade creation of barrels, steel, ingenuity and a few flags, towed by his well-worn Yamaha quad made the rounds to parades, sport days, Canada Day celebrations and reunions within a 60-mile radius. He LOVED to see the kids light up when he made his rounds and would never stop if there was a little face asking for one more ride! Selling the homestead and moving to Canora was a very difficult decision. With the exception of a few years, Louie spent his entire life living on the farm. Happily, they soon found enjoyment in their new home and expanded their family by adopting their new neighbors as family. Louie and Joanne would go for drives to see what was happening in the community or decide on a supper destination. They would go “touring” the countryside, especially in the early fall, to see what was captured on the game cameras. The pre-hunt was just as exciting as the hunt. Louie’s routine included the coffee group at “Humpty’s/Subway” as he called it and going to the “big city” (Mikado) working and rearranging in his sea-can. On Monday nights, Louie and Joanne would get the supper dishes done, then sit down to tap their toes to the Monday Night Polka Power on CJTR. Sadly, Louie passed just before this week’s episode hit the airwaves. Louie was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Ludwina; and his sister, Frances Boychuk. He is survived by his wife, Joanne; children: Mark (Kerri), Gordon (Donna), Luann (Greg), and Jason; six grandchildren: Alexandra, Zack (Coralie), Erik (Katelyn), Lesia (Jackson), Bailey (Chris), and Matt; three great-grandchildren, Kai, Addison, and Nataliya; and his brother, Bernie Zawislak; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 26, 2023, from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home, Canora, SK, with Shawna Leson as certified celebrant officiating. Interment to follow at a later date. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Louie Zawislak.
