Obituary of Lloyd Hughes
It is with profound sadness that the family of Lloyd Russell Hughes announce his peaceful passing on Saturday, April 22nd 2023 at the age of 88 years. Peacefully with his wife and best friend of more than 30 years by his side, Violet (Salter) Hughes. After a lengthy battle with his health, we mourn his passing.
Lloyd was the son of the late John Brenton Hughes (father) and Gertrude Foote (mother). Lloyd lived in Ontario in 1959 where he worked for the Canadian National Railroad (CNR) for 22 years. After an injury left him unable to continue his work, he relocated to New Glasgow where he lived out the rest of his life, his work focussed on small engine repair and mowing the lawn to perfection.
Lloyd will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 34 years, Violet Ethel Hughes (Salter); son Brian Hughes (Heather); lovingly survived by grandson John Graham, and granddaughter Bryanna (Shayne); sisters, Ethel (Aubrey Dee) and Edith (Andre Marchand). He is also survived by step children, Lorne Joudrey (Denise ), Helen Fraser (Glenn); sisters-in-law Dorothy MacKay and Doreen Foote as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Predeceased by previous marriage-partner, Fern Sample; son Brent Hughes; sisters Ethel and Rita Hughes, Betty Marshall and Grace Hatfield; brothers Roy and George Hughes and Jimmy Foote and step daughter Marlayne MacDonald (Colin Cook).
Lloyd, a former member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) brought joy to many. An avid fisherman and hunter, he spent his time with best friends Warren, and Louis once even winning their trophy moose in Cape Breton. Among other hobbies, Lloyd enjoyed his jigsaw puzzles, his little fur baby Mickey, bingo cards, but his real love was music. He will be dearly missed by his friends at the Stellarton Male Choir which represented an extended family all their own. Joining the choir changed his life, and if “Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without.” Lloyd never went without. Performing with his friends at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church among others poured life and gentleness into his occasionally stubborn soul and softened it, and as a member of the New Glasgow Legion (Branch 34) he would dedicate his time and attention to our veterans as Poppy Chairman while serving on various committees and volunteering in support of his communities.
With special thanks to all the compassionate nurses from the Aberdeen Hospital’s Palliative Care Unit and Doctors McDougall and Jota for their exceptional care.
Lloyd is resting at Eagles Funeral Home, Westville where his family will receive visitors on Saturday April 29th from 7 to 9 pm. His funeral services will be held Sunday, April 30th at 2 pm at Eagles Funeral Chapel with Reverend Art Bourré officiating. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in the Lorne Street Cemetery. Donations may be made to Stellarton Male Choir or Saint Andrews Church, family flowers only. A reception will follow at St. Andrews Church Hall, Westville, His funeral service will be streamed live and may be watched by clicking on the following link: www.youtube.com/live/YLaAcY4H9AU?feature=share
Gone Fishin’
I’ve finished life’s chores assigned to me,
So put me on a boat headed out to sea.
Please send along my fishing pole
For I’ve been invited to the fishin’ hole.
Where every day is a day to fish,
To fill your heart with every wish.
Don’t worry, or feel sad for me,
I’m fishin’ with the Master of the sea.
We will miss each other for awhile,
But you will come and bring your smile.
That won’t be long you will see,
Till we’re together you and me.
To all of those that think of me,
Be happy as I go out to sea.
If others wonder why I’m missin’
Just tell ’em I’ve gone fishin’
