Lloyd passed away peacefully June 25, 2023 at Kin Place in Oakbank shortly after an epic 100th birthday celebration.
He is survived by his sons Duane (Dawn), Jeff (Raylene), grandchildren Tamara Martz, Cory Jonsson (Meg), Desi Jonsson (Steffani), Bailey Jonsson(Lee), Kassie Jonsson (Brenden) and great grandchildren Willow, Isabella and Stassi as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews. Also son Daryl Turcotte and family.
Dad was predeceased by wife Gloria, son Jonny and daughters Linda and Debbie.
Alfred Lloyd Axel Jonsson was born June 20, 1923 in a small cabin on the Ateah homestead in Victoria Beach, Manitoba to Freda and Jon Axel Jonsson.
He went to primary school at Victoria Beach and high school in Winnipeg at St. John’s College. Dad served 3 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a wireless gunman in active service in World War 2, stationed out of Reykjavik, Iceland.
After arriving home from Service he was a Mink rancher for a couple of years until he started his carpentry apprenticeship for which he received his papers in 1951.
Dad married his beautiful bride Gloria Cox in 1949 and shortly thereafter moved to Atikokan, Ontario where he worked construction. They moved back to Winnipeg for a period of time and then built their family home in Oakbank, Mb. Here they raised 5 children.
Dad worked for Indian Affairs for 15 years until retiring in 1980 and continued to work doing carpentry on his own until 2000.
The Jonsson’s always enjoyed their horses and after retirement Dad and Mom enjoyed many trail rides out to Riding Mountains, Belair, Carberry Sandhills and Elk Island.
Dad and Mom also enjoyed many holidays with family and friends down south both flying and driving down to Mexico, Antigua, Barbados, Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
Dad loved to putter in his shop like all Jonsson’s and was always making birdhouses, signs, shoe protectors and of course the infamous “BOX GAME”
The Family Tree was a passion for Dad and it kept him in touch with all of the relatives. He would procure whoever couldn’t say no, to write, re-write and update over and over again. We are thankful he left us this treasure.
Eat drink and play Bingo…this was a love of Dad’s. He enjoyed many a Casino Trip to wherever a bus was going.
Dad moved to Kin Place Independent Living in 2013 and he installed the ”Happy Hour” at three o’clock each day. Dad loved to bring people together and Happy Hour was the name for this.
Dad kept in touch with friends and family and this was evident at his 100th Birthday celebration with so many in attendance.
Many thanks to the staff at Kin Place for their wonderful care. We also want to than Dr.Jeff Wiebe for his many compassionate years of care.
In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to a charity of your choice.
As we had a wonderful celebration of life at his 100th birthday we will be having a private graveside service at Sunnyside Cemetery at a later date.
