Kowalsky, Margaret ‘Marg’
December 6, 1928 – July 27, 2023
Throughout her life, Marg Kowalsky (nee McNeil), lovingly known as Marg, Ma, Grandma Marg and/or Great Grandma Marg to many was full of gumption and get up and go, eagerly and energetically undertaking her work and what life laid before her. She was a kind and giving person constantly involved with her family, friends, and community.
Marg and her husband Bob, were both wonderful people who opened their home and hearts to everyone always without question. Bob was shockingly taken from Marg early in his life at age 64. Marg soldiered on alone for more than thirty-two years but now sadly, on July 27, 2023 at the age of 94, has had her calling to rejoin him.
Born in South River, Ontario in 1929 Marg left the care of her mom and dad, —Robert & Elizabeth McNeil, at the tender age of 18 jumping on a southbound train unaccompanied with only 25 cents in her pocket (to call home) heading to the promise of employment at the Dominion Woolens Mill in Preston, Ontario. There she flourished, made new friends, eventually met her beau, Robert Kowalsky, married, and created her own family. The dwelling she lived in on Maple Street was a warm, active, and friendly home for many years.
Her relatives were many including the aforenoted McNeil clan and the very large Simcoe area Kowalsky crew. Family, relatives, and friends often gathered for vacations in the forests of Central Ontario around Restoule, Mikisew, and Algonquin Park but eventually grew roots at ‘the cottage’ on McCullough Lake in Grey County. All of these places were a deep part of her where many fond memories were made. In later years her home with Bob was moved to Thornbury and Clarksburg.
Marg was an active and outgoing member of the community, she was often found playing euchre at the Legion or at the home of a friend, lawn bowling, taking the grandchildren for weeks in the summer or just helping others who needed her. She eventually settled into a seniors apartment in Thornbury where she lived for close to 20 years and more recently moved to the Meaford Long Term Care Facility.
Her spirit will live on through her three children (Sharon List, John, & Bonnie Maitland), eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. She will be sadly missed and warmly remembered as being small but mighty, tiny feet, big heart, the best perogies, sloppy joes & an amazing apple pie made out of Ritz crackers … no apples!!!
Now reunited with her beloved husband and friends, Marg can rest peacefully after dancing and playing cards.
Cremation has taken place and a funeral service will take place at the Ferguson Funeral Home in Meaford, on Thursday, August 3rd at 1 p.m.
