Kenneth’s Obituary
At the Fairview Health Complex, Kenneth James Sydnes, longtime resident of Brownvale (AB), passed away on May 11, 2023, at 88 years of age. He was Recent of Harvest Lodge, Fairview (AB).
Ken was born June 30, 1934 to parents Kolbein & Dorothy Sydnes and raised on the family farm near Brownvale. The farm was a place of chores, hauling water, chopping wood and feeding the horses. As he grew older, he was also off helping the neighbor, one of the first in the neighborhood to have a tractor.
After dad left high school, his first job was driving truck, hauling mail for John Aitken. That grew into hauling groceries and even beer before he was of legal age, which was 21 back then.
After his trucking career he started with the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce in the late 1950’s, starting with the Berwyn branch. He was also posted in Ft. St. John, BC and was in Hudson Hope BC branch when the WAC Bennet dam was being built. From there he was sent to a branch on Jasper Ave. in Edmonton where he met the love of his life, Joyce McKay. They were married May 7, 1966. He was then posted at the CIBC in High Level, AB. In March of 1967 daughter Alison arrived and a year later daughter Valerie was born in April 1968. We then moved to Onaway, Alberta, where Dad worked for the CIBC branch until April 1972. We made the move back to Brownvale and took over the farm that Kolbe in had started back in 1914. The farm was Dad’s home for the next SO years.
Over the years Dad was a councilor for the MD of Peace, bus driver and an Alberta Wheat Pool delegate from 1979-1993. He served 25 years as a director on the board for the North Peace Gas Co-op, many of those years as chair. Dad also served as a director for Region 6 of the Alberta Union of Rural Electrification Associations.
Dad was predeceased by his parents Kolbein Sydnes in 1968 and Dorothy (Francis) Sydnes in 1969 and his wife of 52 years Joyce (McKay) Sydnes in 2018.
He is survived by daughters Alison Renneberg, Valerie Wollms (Heath), grandchildren Jade Wald (Chris Adams), Adam Wald (Katherine), Kendra, Liam and Keelan and Great-granddaughter Evelynn Adams. He is also survived by brother Tom (Carol) Sydnes, as well as nieces, Kathy Jickling (Doug) and Jennifer (Sean) Cageorge, and nephews, Don Smetheram (Annie) and Glenn Smetheram as well as great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by nieces Carol Weitzel, Kathy (Ray) Coulliou, Donna McKay, Louise McKay and nephew Bob (Annie) McKay and many great nieces and nephews on Joyce’s side.
It was Dad’s wish that there not be a funeral. He will be laid to rest at the Brownvale Cemetery next to his wife Joyce.
