It’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog – Mark Twain.
Kenneth John Powless had a fight in him like few others. Finally able to put that fight to rest, Ken peacefully passed in the early morning of May 21, 2023 at the age of 90 years. Ken was a Dad, a Papa, a brother, and a friend. Born on November 10, 1932, Ken spent his childhood and formative years in Regina, SK. In Regina, he also met and married Dorothy Johnson, the love of his life. For their honeymoon, they followed Ken’s other love of his life, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, to Toronto for the Grey Cup. Together Ken and Dorothy grew their family and tackled life’s adventures head-on. Ken graduated high school at 16 and began his career shortly after. Ken had a photographic memory, especially when it came to parts. Ken later joined New Holland farm equipment, where his career flourished. New Holland took Ken and his family from Regina to Calgary, Calgary to Brampton, Brampton back to Calgary, and finally, Calgary to Saskatoon. In the 1970s, an unexpected bump in the road hit when Ken was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour. The prognosis wasn’t good. Despite surgery to remove the tumour, therapies and treatments, Doctors gave Ken only months to live. Ken defied the odds and made a full recovery, and had some pretty cool scars to show for it. Ken always said he wouldn’t have made it through without Dorothy. In 1994, Ken and Dorothy retired from their careers and took on their next roles – Full-time RVers. Splitting their time between Palm Springs and Sundre, they put many miles on their truck and fifth wheel. Later, they traded their home on wheels for an acreage in Sundre and a home in the desert but still made those miles by car. Ken is survived by his rock, his great love, and his relentless caregiver Dorothy Powless (Johnson), two cherished daughters Terry Olineck (Tim) and Leanne Tangjerd (Amir), five grandchildren and their partners, and eight great-grandchildren. Ken was greeted in heaven by his beloved daughter Laurie Powless, his mother Hazel Powless and his aunt Freda Nichol. A Memorial Service will be held to celebrate Ken’s life in the coming weeks. The family would like to thank the Red Deer Hospice Society for their kindness and compassion in the final moments of Ken’s life. Instead of flowers, the family asks you to hold your loved ones close. Should you choose to, donations can be made to the Red Deer Hospice Society in Ken’s honour.
