Katy Moore of Calgary, Alberta passed away in Calgary on August 19th, 2023 at the age of 39 years.
Katy is survived by her mother Jane & her stepdad Bryan Floer; her sisters Christina (Brennan) Matthews, Lise (Fub) Salatino and Pamela (Brad) Dowson; her aunties Jeanie, Joanie, Marnie, Cindy, Sherryl and Val and her uncles Art, Bill, Carl, Dwight, Darrell and Dusty. She had numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and of course her “mini me” niece Kaityn Mattews whom she so loved and adored. Katy was predeceased by her father Michael Moore.
Katy was born in Simcoe, Ontario and moved with her family to Calgary in 1987 at 5 years old. She grew up in Calgary and did all her formal schooling at Woodman Jr. High, Henry Wise Wood High School and SAIT community college. Katy was rookie of the year and the Most Valuable Player for the Sait Trojans womens hockey team. She played hockey at a high level and she was good. She graduated from SAIT as a petroleum engineer.
Katy worked in that field for the Alberta Regulator for 10 years. She knew her true passion and followed her dreams to become an EMT. She was an incredible EMT – she loved the challenge of helping people in the scariest of situations – always remaining cool, competent and ensuring calm.
Katy loved sports and she was good at everything, Hockey, Ball, Golf and Snow Boarding to name a few. Unfortunately, Katy was involved in a life changing accident in 2019 when she was hit by a car in a marked crosswalk. Subsequently she endured more than 11 surgeries and an incredible amount of pain. She battled addiction for the last 7 years of her life, both pain medication and alcohol. She had both of them beat a few times but ultimately, she lost that battle.
Katy embraced the gay community getting to know her many, many friends who’s lives she touched in many different ways. She was a gorgeous woman, her natural beauty and her smile that could light up any room. Her competitive nature and her winning attitude – all will never be forgotten.
A Celebration of Katy’s Life will be held at the Heritage Inn & Convention Centre in High River, AB on Friday, August 25th at 1:00 p.m. Everyone is asked to wear a jersey of any team to honour Katy’s love of sport.
