Obituary For Katharina “Katie” Marie Fair
May 29, 1925 – August 22, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother and auntie, Katie Fair.
Katie was born the third child of Jacob and Anna Marie Gass in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan in 1925. The family moved to the Hythe area in 1930 when Katie was 5 years old, and they settled on a farm in the West Hythe/Circle Bank area. She attended school for eight years in the one room West Hythe school and then dropped out to help at home. As a very young girl she went to work at Frank and Ruth Webb’s household in the Village of Hythe and from there she worked as a hired girl for Bruce and Evelyn Robertson on their farm. Katie was not afraid of hard work!
In 1942, at the age of 17 she met Ernest Fair at a skating party on the river and after dating for a year, they married. They were both 18 years old and they celebrated their 60th Anniversary prior to his death back in 2004. Katie spent the first 18 years of married life raising their four children and helping with the farming, growing a huge garden, sewing, and knitting clothes for her girls and curling. She loved the game!
When her family was raised, she went to work at the Hythe Hospital in 1962 and ended up working there as a ward aide for 25 years. Katie was a member of the Royal Purple and the Legion and spent many hours volunteering at various events in the community until her health problems slowed her down. She moved to the Hythe Pioneer Home in 2010 and spent 12 very good years there prior to moving into the nursing home. With each move, the decision was hers. She was able to control her own life right up to the end and for this her family is truly grateful.
Katie is survived by her daughters Connie Dick, Audrey (Jack) Jewitt, Pat (Ron) Stewart, her son Brian (Betty) Fair. She is also survived by grandchildren Jennifer (Dion) Fair-Nichol, Chris (Rose) Fair, Spencer Fair, Tyler Dick (Maureen), Dana (Kraig) Gramlick, Trina (Shayne) Sieker, Jill Jewitt, Pamela (Art) Blommestein, Jonathan Stewart, and Alycia Harvey. She is survived by great grandchildren Mackenzie (Aaron), Langlie (James), Kenedie, Karter, Rio, Ryan, Hailey, Alexandra, Hannah, Carson, and Mykale (Thomas) and great-great grandchildren Luke, Hadley, Navy, and Devin.
She is predeceased by her husband, Ernest, son-in-law Garry Dick, parents Jacob and Anna Marie Gass, her father and mother-in-law William and Annie Fair, sisters Rose (George) Robertson, Margaret (Ernie) Slade, and Dorothy (Jim) Pollock; brothers Frank (Sophie) Gass, Joe Gass, John (Roselda) Gass. She is also predeceased by her sisters-in-law Catherine Bennett-Fitzsimmons, Mary (Walker) Abbs, and brothers-in-law Johnston (Doreen) Fair, and William (Ruby) Fair.
At Katie’s request, a private family funeral will be held at a later date.
On behalf of mom, the family would like to express our sincere thanks to the doctors and staff at the Pioneer Home and the Long-Term Care Home for the compassionate care you provided. To the residents she shared space with over the past 13 years, thank you for the friendships, kindness, and assistance you offered – it all added up to a better quality of life for her.
