SOUSA, Jose Pereira passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday August 11th 2023, at St. Mary’s General Hospital after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Jose leaves behind the love of his life, his wife of 41 years, Maria Assuncao along with their children Danny (Jessica), Diane (Shawn) and Peter and his grandchildren which he adored; Kerensa, Francesca and Castiel.
Predeceased by his mother Maria Figueiredo Pereira (1997), his father Antonio Sousa Luis (2001), his brother Manuel Pereira Luis (2006), his father-in-law Jose Sousa Freitas (2000), his brothers-in-law Angelo Moura (2015) and Alexander Dobbie (2018) and his first grandson Rafael Gabriel Costa (2019).
He is survived by his siblings Helena (Antonio), Antonio (Adelina), Conceicao (Jose), Aida (Antonio), sister-in-law Conceicao all of Santa Maria, Azores along with his brothers and sisters-in-law Maria (Antonio) of Santa Maria, Antonio (Ilda), Ines, Jose (Paula), Isabel (Mario) and Ana, all of Cambridge, Ontario. He will also be greatly missed by all his nieces, nephews and cousins in Santa Maria, Canada and United States.
Jose was born and raised in Pocilgas of Santa Barbara in Santa Maria, Azores and immigrated to Canada in 1982. For over 40 years he did various jobs, but masonry work was his passion. After a few years of entrepreneurship, he proudly opened a masonry business naming it after his children, D.D.P. Masonry, which lives on through his sons. In 2010, Jose and his family moved out to the countryside of Cambridge to begin a hobby farm where he raised cattle, chickens and worked in his large fruit and vegetable garden. It was his little piece of Santa Maria here in Canada. He was so proud to provide for his family in this way. His hardworking hands – whether it was laying brick or on the farm – worked until the very end.
The Sousa family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Matthew Kilmurry – thank you for doing everything you could to save our husband/ dad. The family would also like to thank Martha, Carmen, Jocelyn, Tatiana, Luanne and all the other wonderful and compassionate nurses on floor 6 at St. Mary’s General Hospital.
Resting at Corbett Funeral home, 95 Dundas St. N, Cambridge, where family and friends will be received on Monday August 14, 2023, from 5-9p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church, 185 Elgin St. S, Cambridge, on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at 10a.m. Interment to follow at Parklawn Cemetery.
