Obituary for
John Sangster
Dad passed peacefully at the Golden Manor on Sunday June 25th 2023 at the age of 96 years with family by his side. Born and raised in Timmins, Dad married Shirley (McIntosh), on September 26th 1953 and they spent almost 70 years together. Survived by Shirley and their 2 daughters, Susan Stortz (Peter Myslywec) of Kitchener and Carol Halt (John Bohdanec) of Timmins. Predeceased by his son-in-law, Hannu Halt (2009). Dad was most proud of his 2 grandsons, Brad Halt (Amanda – deceased 2022) of Whitehorse, Yukon, and Jeff Halt (Marie Lou) of Warfield, BC. Grandpa loved hearing about and seeing pictures of Brad and Jeff’s travels, and adventures, and of their dogs Agon, Moxie and Lumi. Dad will be fondly remembered by Zack and Nick Bohdanec and their families. Predeceased by his father, Harry, and mother Mary, and his 5 siblings: Bill Sangster (Mildred), Dorothy MacKenzie (Ken), Barbara Matcheski (Alphonse), Edna King (Jack), and Angus Sangster (Annette). Also predeceased by Shirley’s parents, Herbert and Mary, and her siblings Norma Mattinen, Rita Salamone and Ross, Murray, Gordon and Allan McIntosh. Survived by Shirley’s sister, Pat Newhouse, as well as many nieces and nephews in both the Sangster and McIntosh families. Dad’s passion was golfing, which he started at a young age while caddying at the Hollinger Golf Course. He was a long-time member of Spruce Needles Golf Course, and never missed a chance to be out on the course with his golfing buddies, no matter the weather. Dad had endless golf stories, and he proudly displayed the trophies for his 2 holes-in-one at Spruce Needles. In 2011 Dad went on the golf vacation of his dreams, travelling to Scotland with his good friends Vince, Douse and Bob. Dad talked about this trip often, and enjoyed looking through the photo memories. Dad had a very strong work ethic, and started in the lumber business in the 60’s at Hill Clark Francis Limited. He was a proud and loyal employee at Feldman Timber for over 50 years. Dad always put the customer first and was well respected within the building supply industry. Dad enjoyed working for the Feldman family, first for Morris and then for Lorne until his retirement in 2018 at the age of 92 years. Our family is grateful to Lorne and Anna for their kindness and for giving Dad a genuine sense of purpose amongst his work family. As per Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place with burial at the Whitney Cemetery. A celebration of Dad’s life will take place at a later date when our family can be together. We are pretty certain Dad is enjoying a round or two of golf with his good friends who have gone before him. Hit it straight and keep it in play, Dad! Our family would like to thank all of the staff at the Golden Manor, and especially on East 1 where Dad lived with Mom for the past 3-1/2 years, and where Mom continues to reside. The staff treated Dad like family and with utmost care and respect. Thanks also to Dr. Julie Auger and Debby Kapias, for your wonderful care and support. If desired, donations to the Golden Manor Resident Enhancement Fund would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, Cremation and Reception Centre, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins.
