On May 11, 2023. In his 95th year, John Herweyer passed away peacefully and has joined his wife Willy in heaven. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2012. Cherished father of 6 children – Marianne (Jake) Vedder, Paul (deceased), Rob, Ed (Beth), Don (Anita) and Annette (James) MacRitchie. John’s 17 grandchildren will miss their Opa’s words of wisdom and shoulder punches: Jason (Heather), Scott (Janine), Steve (Chantell), Matt (Pri), Paul (Dawn), Cory (Ashley), Brad (Tessa), Jodi (Mark), Jordan (Marie), Kate (Dave), Emily (Bryson), Megan, Rebecca, Darren, Lauren, Victoria and Noah. John leaves a legacy of 22 great-grandchildren! John is also survived by his sister Henny and many nieces and nephews in the Netherlands and British Columbia. John was born on September 27, 1928 in Rysord, Netherlands. John and Willy married and immigrated to Canada in 1952. After two years of hard work, John started his own business operating a vegetable delivery route in the Alta Vista area for the next 40 years. In 1986 they moved to Russell where he soon started a market garden business to keep busy during his “retirement” years. John was a great listener and enjoyed hearing about the latest happenings in your life. He loved to talk gardening and to provide wise words of encouragement. Dad inspired us all with his work ethic, with his love of family and of his connected group of friends, customers, and community generally. He had a big heart filled with love and respect that he shared with many. Ottawa became his home of choice but he stayed in touch with the large family in The Netherlands; his last visit to the “old country” in 2008 was an amazing family event for both sides of the Atlantic.
Family and friends are invited to visit at the Daley Family Funeral Home, 6971 Bank Street on Tuesday, May 16th from 6-9 p.m. A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, May 17th at 11 a.m. at Calvary Christian Reformed Church, 3782 Russell Road, Ottawa. Special thanks to all the staff at the Russell Meadows Retirement Home for the exceptional care and the support of family and friends.
