It is with heavy hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of John G. Cammaert with family at his side, on August 12, 2023 at University Hospital, London in his 77th year. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife Janet (Love) of 56 years and their children, Sean (Kara), Tillsonburg, Ont.; Nicole (Doug), Sydney, N.S. ; James (Stacey), Cambridge, Ont. ; and Matthew (Jennifer), Toronto, Ont. Cherished Papa/Opa of Ashley, Joshua, Lillian, Anais, Olivia, Grace, Quinn (predeceased 2021), Henry and Oban. John is also predeceased by his parents Frank and Mary Cammaert (London, Ont.), older brother Gus and younger brother Richard. John leaves behind his loving siblings George (Joan), Frank, Tinie (John) all of London, Ont. And Mary (Bill), Mt. Brydges, Ont. And loving sister-in-law Jeannine (Love) Stevens, Sarnia, Ont. John will also be missed by many cousins, cousins-in-law, nieces and nephews and friends. John was a quiet and introspective soul, but the hallmark that he was known for was his mischievous grin. He had a wicked, quiet wit about him and was always up for a prank and a laugh but above all, he was kind. One of the legacies he leaves behind is this mischievous grin that shows on each of his children’s and grandchildren’s faces and their characters. John was a talented but humble artist who enjoyed the outdoors which inspired some of his art. After gaining several years of camping experience with his parents and siblings he introduced camping to his own family and from then on many memorable camping trips were enjoyed with their own children and later grandchildren. And, in later years several weekends of camping with friends and again with parents and siblings – circle complete! John’s passion was his family and he valued the many years he spent coaching his three boys in house league minor hockey at different age levels. When he wasn’t coaching, he was in the stands cheering on his boys in hockey and his daughter when she figure skated and played ringette, although he never quite understood those rules. John also enjoyed golfing and fishing and treasured the times he did these things with his boys. His job took the family from hometown of London to Elmira where they raised their children and made many lifelong friends, some who played guitar and mandolin and would have sing songs around campfires and John cherished these moments and was thrilled when they played ‘Dueling Banjos’. John was an active member of the Elmira Lions Club for a number of years and later a member of the Huron Shores Lions Club in Point Clark. He enjoyed many years of snowmobiling especially the annual fundraising weekend in Dorset, Ont., and the annual snowmobiling weekend at Crane Lake, in Parry Sound with friends. After a career of many years in sales, then owning his own business they finally retired to Kincardine, where they enjoyed morning coffees on the beach and in the evening a glass of wine as they enjoyed the quiet rippling waves and the beautiful sunsets over Lake Huron. Truly special moments. Many wonderful family gatherings held in Kincardine built lasting memories. While in Kincardine John also volunteered at the local fishery, and as a Porter at the Hospital. In 2016 they moved to Baldwin Place in Tillsonburg, Ont. bringing them geographically closer to all their children and hospitals as John had incurred some health issues. John Volunteered on the Social Committee as Chairperson for a couple of years and once again, new and wonderful friendships were developed in this very caring community. He was also very proud of his recently purchased and long-awaited Red Mustang convertible! He definitely loved driving and, looked pretty darn handsome doing it! Cremation has taken place. A visitation for John will be held at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg (519-842-5221) on Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. A Liturgical Service will follow at 1:00 pm with Father Seejo John officiating. A Celebration of John’s life will be held at the Baldwin Place Community Centre, 142 Weston Drive, where the family will receive family and friends immediately after the service. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Tillsonburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to M.A.D.D. Canada or the Alzheimer’s Society, Southwest Partners would be appreciated by the family. Thank you to the Doctors, Nurses and staff on the 7th floor Stroke Unit University Hospital, London. Also, a very big thank you to Ostrander’s Funeral Home for their compassionate assistance during this sad time. John was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren. Most of all, John was loyal to Janet and the love they shared was obvious to anyone they met! His smile and that mischievous grin of his will be so missed by us all. As will, one of his often said phrased to Janet – “And just how much did that really cost?”
