Obituary
John was born in Toronto, Ontario and was of Irish descent. His family arrived by ship during the Potato Famine and settled in the Ottawa Valley. John’s father, Harold Edwin Boyd was born in 1898 in Merrickville, ON and served in WWI (1914-1918). While in England he met a lovely lady, Winnifred Baker who he brought back to Canada and married after the war. John was the second child of the marriage and younger brother to Arnold Thomas Boyd and older brother to Barbara Ann Smith nee Boyd.
John met his wife and soul mate Catherine (Kay) Laverne Paterson in grade school located in the Bloor St. and High Park area of Toronto. Kay’s father William (Bill) Paterson who was born in Scotland joined the Canadian Army and served overseas for WWII (1939-1945) as a medic, saving soldier’s lives. When Bill returned his daughter had a young handsome boyfriend in her life, John. John and Kay were married on September 2, 1950 in Toronto. John was an aspiring professional photographer with Panda and Associates while Kay worked for A.C. Neilson Marketing.
At Panda, John worked his way from darkroom technician to one of the firm’s top professional photographers. John had the great gift for seeing and having the patience to wait for that exact moment to capture the perfect photo. While living in Toronto John and Kay had three boys, Wayne Edwin (Deborah) born 1951, Bruce Christopher (Mary Jane) born 1953 died 2016 and Stephen John (Cathy) born 1956.
John and Kay wanted to strike out on their own and decided to move to Lindsay in 1958 to start a photographic studio with his partner Robert (Bob) Payne called Kenlin Studio. First 3 letters of Kent St. and first 3 letters of Lindsay made the name and by 1958 they established 24 hour black and white photo finishing called Daily Photo Finishing Inc. John was an avid member of the Kinsman Club holding all of the executive positions at one time or another and being the photographer for the club. With a tremendous workload and a busy social and community life John and Kay managed to have their second set of three children, Denyse Derry born 1960 died 2014, Hugh Baker (Patricia) born 1961 and James Paterson born 1965.
In 1971 John Boyd Photography & Associates was established whereby John continued to be the wedding photographer for Victoria and Haliburton Counties until 1977 when he became the Sheriff of Victoria and Haliburton Counties.
John worked incredibly hard most of his life, but when he had a break those breaks were taken on the Caribbean island of Nevis. John and Kay first visited this paradise in 1968 and continued to enjoy being a part of the lives of many of the residents and visitors of the island until 2020.
John had an incredibly interesting and rewarding life and will be sadly missed by his wife Kay, his children, his grandchildren, his great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, family members and friends.
As per John’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service.
