João (John) Fernandes
1955-2023
As the morning sun rose on the new year, we said our final goodbyes to John. He was surrounded by our love and was no longer in discomfort. He leaves his wife Maria and his children Mike, Chris and Angie to rejoin his parents Jose and Virginia and his in-laws Adelaide and Manuel Dias whom he has dearly missed.
João was born on March 23, 1955 in Cisao Vila Verde Portugal and came to Canada on June 13, 1976, and lived with his Tio João and Tia Florinda Fernandes in Kitchener. He worked in the blending department with J.M. Schneiders for 33 years, eventually retiring in 2010.
At a friend’s wedding he took a bet and danced with a beautiful, young Maria Dias and within a short time asked her to marry him. They married on July 18, 1981 and have had a wonderful, loving marriage for more than 41 years. Together they raised three loving children: Michael (Robyn), Christopher, and Angie (Brandon). On October 23, 2022, Angie gave birth to John’s first grandchild, Aria Adelaide.
John was like a big brother to his cousins Tony (Andrea) and Noemia (Dom) and their children Jacob, Dominic, Amelia and Allison. He will also be fondly remembered by all the rest of his cousins and their families. He was also a wonderful brother-in-law to Maria’s siblings Monique (Rick), Manny and Gilbert, and uncle to their children Andrew (Kelsie), Melanie (Brad), Cory, and Caitlyn.
John leaves a huge hole in our hearts and we will miss his stories and hilarious sense of humour. He truly brought life to all our family gatherings and parties. A faithful friend and fantastic neighbour, John was always there to help others.
João’s family will receive relatives and friends from 2:30-8 p.m. on Thursday, January 5, 2023 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick St. Kitchener. Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 300 Simeon St., on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 10 a.m.
