Joann Cordelia Feindel Mooney of Lunenburg and formerly of Herman’s Island and London, UK, passed away peacefully at Harbour View Haven on April 19, 2023.
Born on June 19, 1927 in Stroudsburg, PA, Joann was the daughter of the late Joseph Ray Feindel and Anne Dreher Feindel.
Joann is survived by her son, Colin (Tracy) Mooney, four grandchildren, Yashar, Elisaph, Hadassah, Natsar; her sister, Cynthia Ransbury Berresse Ploski, nephews Michael and James, nieces, Melanie and Alissa, daughter-in-law, Marilyne Tolle, Godson, Peter Graham, and Goddaughter, Janet Feindel. She was predeceased by her husband, Craig McDonald Mooney and her son,Stephen Craig Mooney.
As a youth Joann was always admired for her athletic abilities. She excelled in every sport she attempted, gaining special recognition as a star player on the Scarsdale High School Womens’ Varsity teams in suburban Scarsdale, New York, where she grew up. Joann moved with her parents to the Upper West Side of New York City before they settled in Scarsdale. She attended the Ethical Culture School on 64th street and Central Park West. During the annual family summers in Nova Scotia, Joann added sailing to her many skills, becoming an able skipper of the family sailboats, and a regular contender for trophies in weekly sailboat races held by the Herman’s Island Yacht Club near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.
Joann’s family had a special attraction to Lunenburg for it was there, seven generations previously, their forbear George Jacob Feindel, had landed when he emigrated from Zweibrücken, Germany, in the 1750’s. Joann’s great love of nature was shaped by the sea, salt water and sky in Nova Scotia. Among her favorite memories were those of camping with other kids on a nearby, uninhabited island with patches of delicious raspberries ripe for the picking.
After graduating from Scarsdale High School, Joann earned her Baccalaureate Degree from St. Lawrence University in upstate Canton, NY where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Post-graduation, one of her first jobs was in the offices of the noted neuroscientist, Wilder Penfield, Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University in Montreal.
Joann left this position to marry Craig Mcdonald Mooney, a psychology professor, in early 1957 and they lived in Canada with the firstborn of their two children, Stephen. Their second child, Colin, was born in England where the family lived for several years before returning to Canada. Joann eventually returned to London, returning whenever possible for summers on beloved Herman’s Island. To bridge the physical gap with her extended family and friends, Joann was a keen and faithful writer of notes and cards. Joann’s love for family ran deep. She would drive six hours from Ottawa to Gorham, NH to spend time with family. She loved to take walks, never hesitating to stop and make friends with everyone along the way. Her wit and intelligence, as well as her contagious laugh remained hallmarks throughout her life, as was her faith. From her earliest years at St. James the Less Episcopal Church in Scarsdale to St. John’s Anglican Church in Lunenburg, Joann remained an ardent worshiper throughout her long life. A number of years ago Joann returned permanently to Lunenburg, where she knew she would have friends and excellent care. The same attributes that made Joann a fine athlete in her younger years enabled her to endure the challenges of this final chapter of life with patience, goodwill, humour, and of course faith.
Special thanks to Roxie and Ben Smith, Myles and June Robar, Claire and Ronnie Feener, and the folks at Harbour View Haven for your kindness and assistance.
Donations in Joann’s memory may be made to St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg, Harbour View Haven, or a charity of choice.
