Obituary
Peacefully on the morning of Monday, July 3, 2023, Joan passed away at the age of 92. Joan was the beloved wife of Harry Hartley, mother of Michael & Canteris, and grandmother of Anabel McCormick. Joan was a loving and caring mother and grandmother, whose memory will be cherished by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Joan was born in Deloraine, MB, and moved to Winnipeg in 1933 with her family. She was predeceased by her parents, William (Ted) & Mary Chalmers, her sisters Barrie Wilson (Glenn –deceased), Mary Anne Schiestel (Frank – Deceased), and brother William (Bill) Chalmers (Merle). Joan was raised in Winnipeg and married Harry in St. Alban’s Anglican Church in 1954. Together they moved to Rose Valley, Swift Current, returning to Winnipeg, and finally moved to Calgary in 1960. Joan began her career with the Bank of Montreal in Winnipeg and met Harry while working at the same branch. Joan loved to sing. She was a member of the St. Alban’s Choir and played Mabel, the lead soprano, in their production of The Pirates of Penzance as well as performing in several other productions. Joan was very active in the Calgary Festival Chorus and Christ Church (Elbow Park) Choir in Calgary. She was an avid reader. From a very young age, she was a bookworm. She also loved going for walks, nature, bird watching, travelling, gardens, art, classical music, and family camping and sailing vacations. Joan enjoyed sailing most when the mast was straight-up and there was gin in her tonic. Joan was a stay-at-home Mum and also the accountant of the family businesses.
