BEAUSAERT, L. “Jean” Bernice (April 17, 1935 – June 20, 2023)
Passed away, peacefully, after a courageous struggle with illness, at V.O.N. Sakura House Hospice, Woodstock, on June 20th, 2023, L. “Jean” Bernice (nee McKillen) Beausaert, of Walsingham, at the age of 88. Jean was born on the ninth concession of North Walsingham, daughter of the late Douglas and Millie McKillen. She was well known as “Aunt Jean” by many friends and area neighbours. For 35 years, Jean and her husband Maurice (2003) grew tobacco on the 7th concession of Walsingham. Jean enjoyed attending old-time music dances, auction sales, steam shows, flea markets, and ploughing matches. Jean was a member of St. Williams United Church and the former Walsingham United Church. She was always very active in her community, as a life member of both the United Church Women’s League and the Walsingham Women’s Institute. She was also involved with the 4H Club, the Norfolk Federation of Agriculture, the Tobacco Board and was a regular volunteer with the election polls (Norfolk), the Thrift Shop in Port Rowan and for many years she oversaw bookings for Walsingham Community Hall. Every fall, Jean enjoyed entering exhibits at the local Langton, Houghton, Walsh and Norfolk County Fairs and she was renowned for her preserving prowess, donating much of her work to local fund-raising activities.
Jean is survived by her daughter Laurie LaForge (Lyle), of Walsingham. Lovingly remembered by her grandson Derek (Crystal) LaForge and their children: Chase, Coleton, and Slade; granddaughter Rochelle LaForge and her son Michael. Jean is also survived by nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Predeceased by her husband Maurice Beausaert (2003) and his parents Adophine (1975), Adolf (1992), as well as by her three brothers Ralph McKillen (1945), Donald McKillen (1962), and by James “Jim” McKillen (2019).
In keeping with Jean’s expressed wishes, a public funeral service of remembrance will be held on Monday, June 26th, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. in the Maurice J. Verhoeve Funeral Homes- Burial and Cremation Services Inc. Chapel, 40 Queen St., Langton, by Pastor Ted Smith and Pastor Buck Buchner. Public visitation will take place immediately prior to the funeral on Monday between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. Burial follows the funeral service in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Friends, neighbours, and relatives can contribute memorial donations to “Norfolk Association for Community Living” or to “St. Williams United Church” via Jean’s online tribute page at www.verhoevefuneralhomes.com, and contribute letters of condolence, send flowers, or share favourite memories.
