Obituary
At times she was Mrs. Dallaire, Jean to her friends, Aunt Jean to her nieces and nephews and Nanny to her precious grandchildren, but to four of us she was MOM.
DALLAIRE, JEAN BARBARA: 1934 – 2023 – Jean Dallaire (Stanger) of Grand Barachois, and formerly of Moncton, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2023, at the age of 89. Mom’s battle with Alzheimer’s is over and she is at peace.
Jean was a working mom and together with her husband Raymond, they provided for their family, and always made their children a priority. They enjoyed car trips, summer vacations, visits to family, outdoor fun and, of course, sports.
Our mom is survived by and will be truly missed by her four children, Rachael Guidry (John) of Bathurst, John Dallaire (Catherine) of Moncton, David Dallaire (Mary Jane) of Bedford, NS and Nancy McKinnon (Neil) of Whitby, ON. Even when our innocence was questionable, mom was quick to come to our defence with all her vigour. In her eyes, each one of us was perfect.
Mom’s nine grandchildren were precious to her, and she will be lovingly remembered as Nanny by Jennifer Adams (Kyle), Adam Guidry, Zachary and Margo Dallaire, Alexandra Johnson (Jerrad), Jack Dallaire (Taylor), Meghan Roy (Joe), Zachary McKinnon (Mackenzie) and Madelin Turner (Regan). Although her disease was advanced, her eyes lit up with visits from and photos of her great grandchildren: Raymond Joseph Roy, Max Johnson, Rowan Turner and Isla Adams. Her home was always a welcoming hub of fun and activities for her grandchildren where she taught them to bake, make crafts and play games. Nanny loved to travel, and she took part in her grandchildren’s sports, concerts, and achievements. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws.
In addition to her parents and three sisters, Jean is predeceased by her loving husband of 58 years Raymond Dallaire who died in 2013. She was the third daughter of the late John (Jack) and Catherine Stanger (Winton). Born in Jacquet River, NB, she grew up in Moncton and as a young adult, moved to Montreal to begin her career. She later returned to Moncton where she met and married Raymond, the love of her life, and retired after a 35-year career in human resources at Sears Canada. After her children were grown, Jean golfed regularly at Lakeside Golf Club and was involved in many golf-related committees, she also bowled, reluctantly learned how to swim and walked several half marathons. At 74, she placed 3rd in her age category at the Ottawa International Marathon.
Jean loved and cared deeply for her family, and she considered her closest friends as family too. Sadly, she grieved, in her own way, the passing of several dear friends in recent years.
Despite her illness, mom remembered us all and never lost her sense of humour. Until the end, and to the delight of her grandchildren, she was quick with one-liners. Her enthusiasm, courage, energy, kindness, and quick wit will truly be missed by all who have loved her.
The family expresses its sincere appreciation for the care and kindness shown to our mother by the staff at Residence Moncton.
There will be no visitation, however a celebration of Jean’s life will be arranged at a later date. In memory of Jean, if you wish, you may express your sympathy by donating to the Alzheimer’s Society (alzheimer.ca) or the Canadian Cancer Society (cancer.ca). Arrangements will be in the care of Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995), where online condolences are welcome and appreciated at
