Jane (Catton) Brady passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family in the Palliative Care Unit at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre just before midnight on January 15, 2023. Jane is survived by her daughters, Julia and Jennifer Catton; husband, Charles Catton; her brothers, John and Jeremy (Donna) Brady; and her loving nieces, Jade Brady and Amanda Spicksley.
Passionate and vivacious, Jane was more than a fighter. Surviving five separate cancer diagnoses in her life, she ultimately faced the end of her journey with poise and grace, finding comfort in the same hospital that had saved her life so many times before. Her final hours were spent smiling as she listened to her favourite music with her dearest family, whom she loved more than anything.
Born in London, England on June 19, 1953, Jane began her career at North Middle Hospital as a Radiation Therapist before immigrating to Canada in 1980. Jane continued her work in Toronto at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, known then as the Princess Margaret Hospital, where she met her future husband, Charles. At the same time, Jane received her first cancer diagnosis, beginning a 40+ year journey with the Princess Margaret, both personal and professional.
Wanting a safe place for her daughters to grow, Jane moved to Burlington, Ontario in 1985 and became an active member of her community. She was a devoted member of St. Christopher’s Anglican Church for over 35 years and more recently, a member of the Burlington Footnotes seniors dance troupe, where her enthusiasm shone forth at the annual year-end performance.
As a stay-at-home mother from 1983 to 1995, Jane was the first to sign up for school bake sales, church rummage sales or to welcome new members to the community through the Burlington Newcomers Club. When her daughters were older, Jane returned to work as a Clinical Trials Associate, dedicating the remainder of her professional life to improving cancer treatment for patients around the world. At the start of this second stage of her career at Princess Margaret Hospital, Jane was part of the team to trial a hormone therapy treatment for breast cancer that she later received herself after her own diagnosis in 2016.
Jane was well loved by her family and friends on both sides of the Atlantic and will be dearly missed. We find comfort in knowing that her beautiful smile is shining down on the world from above as one of the angels that she so cherished throughout her life.
Family and friends are invited to share a glass of champagne and chocolate cake, with real whipped cream, to honour Jane and her extraordinary life.
Visitation will be on Thursday, January 26, 2023, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Smith’s Funeral Home, 485 Brant St, Burlington, ON L7R 2G5. Funeral service and reception to follow on Saturday, January 28 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Christopher’s Anglican Church, 662 Guelph Line, Burlington, ON L7R 3M8.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation in memory of Jane to the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in support of Palliative Care or Breast Cancer Research. supportthepmcf.ca/ui/PDPMemorial/p/JaneBrady
