Peacefully, at LaSalle Park Retirement Home with her family by her side, Jane Mary (Simpson) O’Brien, age 94, passed away on January 5, 2023. Jane was predeceased by her loving husband Robert Joseph (2020). Survived and sadly missed by her children, Mary Ann (Michael), Maureen (Gabe), John (Marianna), Catherine (Henry) and Patti (Dwight), grandchildren Erin (Mark), Caroline (Saya), Sarah (Evan); Alexandra (Steven), Emily (Joey), Heather (Myles); David (Asia), Graham (Jocelyn), Laura (Matt); Adam (Jessica), Nicolaas (Zainab), Stephen (Rachel), Rachel; Michael (Erica), Kristin (Jordan), Meghan (Adam), and great grandchildren, Braeden & Clara, Hélèna & Théodore, Felix & Sage, Harper, and Brooks & Logan. Greatly missed by surviving sisters, brothers & sisters-in-law, Jim Simpson, Muriel Murphy, Lorraine Simpson, Paul & Marie Simpson, Margaret Rizzo, and Ward & Oresta Simpson.
Jane was also predeceased by her parents, Sherman and Mary Ann Simpson and her brothers & sisters-in-law, Lorna Simpson, Hugh Simpson, Kirk and Doreen Simpson, John and Ronnie Simpson, Nick Rizzo, Dan Murphy, and members of the O’Brien family, Jack and Myrtle, and Robert’s siblings, James O’Brien (Irene), Frank O’Brien (Doris), Marie Beattie (Joseph), Margaret Baker (William), and Gerald O’Brien (Phyllis).
Born in South Porcupine, Ontario, Jane attended Welland High School, and graduated with the Gold Medal from St. Joseph’s Hospital Hamilton Nursing School (1949). Jane was awarded a scholarship to Western University to pursue a Public Health certification.
Jane was one of the founding members of Holy Rosary Parish and, notably, a member of the Catholic Women’s League for 70 years.
Jane was a deeply caring mother, always compassionate with others, and she had an endless capacity to help anyone in need.
Jane was highly intelligent and a master at playing Bridge and Euchre. She spent many afternoons playing cards with her friends, and enjoyed her new love of afternoon bingo.
Visitation will be held at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 287 Plains Road East, Burlington, ON, on Sunday January 8 from 2-7 pm.
Vigil prayers January 8 at 4 pm.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church on Monday, January 9 at 11 am. Interment will take place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
