Obituary
Jake Bruinewoud passed away on August 11, 2023, from his home in Saltair, British Columbia, where he had been enjoying retirement for 10 years. He went home to Glory in peace to be forever with his Lord.
Jacob Willem Bruinewoud was born on December 4, 1943 in Zwolle Holland and emigrated to Canada with his parents in 1953. His family eventually settled in Woodstock, Ontario, where Jake worked with them to establish Maya Yogurt Ltd. and the Maya Health Food Centre. A call westward led him to train and remain in service with the RCMP in British Columbia for 8 years. This career was followed by a sales representative position with Canadian Pacific Airlines. His love of adventure and travel soon led him back to Woodstock where he opened Oxford Travel Centre and spent many years sharing his enthusiasm and expertise with others.
For his culminating career, Jake was appointed by the Attorney General to be a presiding Justice of the Peace for the Province of Ontario. He served in courts throughout Ontario, mainly in Criminal Law and Provincial Offences. As an independent officer of the court, he also had the power to administer oaths, take affidavits, certify documents and perform marriages. He took delight and due diligence in his judicial duties for 33 years.
Over the years, Jake also served as a volunteer in communities wherever he lived. He was a lifelong member of Rotary International, first in the Woodstock-Oxford Club in Ontario, then in the Ladysmith Rotary Club in British Columbia, where he served as president 2017/2018. He was also dedicated to his position on the board of Disaster Aid Canada, enabling assistance to communities around the world in times of need. Wherever he lived, Jake found fellowship with members of local Christian churches, serving and celebrating his unwavering Faith in Jesus Christ.
Jake’s enduring passion was for his family:
Sandra (Elsom) beloved wife and companion for 57 years.
Son Andy and Gloria in Embrun, Ontario
Daughter Heather and Jason with grandchildren Blaine and Arileah Joy in Holland, Michigan.
Daughter Sharon with his grandsons Nate and TJ in Ingersoll, Ontario.
On August 30, 2023, a Memorial Gathering for friends and family in British Columbia will be held at Warmland Community Church in Crofton, BC. at 6 pm.
