SUMMERS, IRIS – December 22, 1932 – August 10, 2023
Bertha “Iris” Summers. Gently passed with family by her side on Thursday, August 10, in her 91st year. Iris lived for her family, who will always remember her kitchen as the center of love, laughter, acceptance and the best meals. Her Sunday dinners were mini family reunions. With 9 children, 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren, her country home was often overflowing with family, and nothing brought her greater joy.
Born and raised on her family farm in Frankville, she grew up with her twin sister Ivy and her brothers, Charlie, Douglas, and Ronald.
She lived and raised her family in the village of Rocksprings, and is remembered fondly as a community icon by local residents.
After raising her family, she went to work at Burnbrae Farms, where her extraordinary work ethic was legendary. She was a proud employee there for over 30 years, retiring after her 80th birthday.
She loved to read and was a conscientious citizen who paid close attention to Canadian politics and news stories. Her table was a meeting place for discussions, jokes, puzzles, crosswords, Scrabble games, laughter and tears. She loved animals, always having favourite dogs and cats sharing her home. She adored Rick Mercer and attended several of his shows, even meeting him on two occasions.
When she wasn’t working, cooking or spending time with her family, she was tending her many flowerbeds and her own small flock of hens, supplying the whole family with eggs. Music was an essential part of her life, and she was an avid concert goer. Every event was an opportunity for joy, and she passed along her gift of laughter and appreciation to her family.
She was predeceased by her eldest son, Tony Summers, her parents Thomas John Horsefield and Florence Etta Horsefield (Brown), and her brothers Charlie Horsefield and Douglas Horsefield.
She lives on in the hearts of her children: Debbie McCormac (Perry), Paul Summers (Laurie), Robin Summers (Michelle), Kathy Morrison, Tammy Summers, Laurie Lozo (Fred), Bonnie Summers (Steve), Lianne Summers (Sheldon), and also with her grandchildren: Tracy Madsen (Larrin), Matt Madsen, Mark Madsen, April Stevens (Tony), Steven Summers, Kevin Summers, Andrew Morrison, Becky Morrison, Josh Morrison, Melissa Summers, Thomas Summers, Paul Summers, David Summers, Katelyn Lozo, Shelly Lozo, Chelsea Donnelly, Ryan Donnelly, Jody Summers, and Scott Summers, as well 21 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren, who will grow up listening to stories of her strength, character, positivity and kindness. She is also deeply missed and forever remembered by her twin sister, Florence Ivy Campbell, and her nieces Beverley, Brenda, and Doreen.
Special thanks to everyone at the Brockville General Hospital, for treating our Iris with much tenderness and respect.
A service is planned for family and friends on Friday, August 18th, beginning with visitation at 11:00am and the service at noon, at Judson’s Funeral Home, 3 Elgin St., South, Athens, ON.
If desired, donations in her honour can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada, or the Palliative Care Program at the Brockville General Hospital.
