SCOTT (MORASH), Irene Isabelle, age 91, of Enfield, passed away April 19, 2023, in the Colchester East Hants Health Center, Truro. Born April 9, 1932, in Bedford, she was the eldest of 11 children. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 50 years, Frank Scott, her mother, Bertha Lowe; her father George Morash. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Helen Beaver, Hilda Fredericks, and Margaret and Terry Morash at infancy. Irene is survived by her children, Brian (Rose), Brenda (Art), Francis (Teddy), Andrew (Karen). She is also survived by her siblings, Jean, Edward, Maude, Willard, Florence, and Frank. Irene is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and her wonderful grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In Irene’s younger years, she worked at Moir’s. Upon starting her family with Frank, she gave up work and dedicated her life to be home to raise her children. Irene became the icon and rock of the Scott family. Her love, humour and caring ways proved many times over that she was our #1 Mother, Sister, Aunt, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother. While being home with her children, Irene exceled in cooking and baking, being well known for her bread, cinnamon rolls, peanut butter squares, graham wafer squares and date squares to name a few. It was not uncommon to walk into Irene’s and find homemade bread on the counter and fried bread dough in the pan with Crosby’s Molasses waiting. When she was not in the kitchen, she was in her flower beds and vegetable gardens. Irene was an avid gardener, taking much pride in the beauty of her flowers, shrubs, and vegetables. Once vegetable crops were ready, there was always a family hodge podge to be had. Irene loved the outdoors, soaking up the sun and nature that surrounded her. Her sun-kissed skin was always commented on, and she would often brag about how well she tanned.
Irene was known for her Christmas scene display. Each year she would add a new piece to the front lawn. The family would all help in cutting, painting, and varnishing new scenes. Irene took immense pleasure in displaying these scenes for the community. With Christmas music always playing outdoors during the season, she created a winter wonderland for the public. She loved watching families stop and take pictures while they walked through the display. Some folks offered chocolates or other small tokens of appreciation for her hard work, or simply a thank you for the beauty she showed at Christmas. As promised to Irene, we will carry on this tradition as a family.
As noted above, Irene was not a woman to sit still too long. She always had to keep her hands busy. Although down time was never often, rainy days would keep her inside. This was time for housework, knitting, embroidery and quilting. In the last three years she really took a love for quilting, ensuring her grandchildren and great grandchildren were given homemade quilts as a token of her love.
Irene loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren beyond words. She treasured their helping hands with the yard work, and gardens. She loved sitting with them, enjoying candy, or nibbling on her favourite, sour cream and onion chips with a cup of tea or coffee in hand. Irene never turned down a drive for an orange pineapple ice cream from Withrow’s Farm Market, if this was not available it was a drive to Dairy Queen for a strawberry sundae.
Some would say, she wore the “white hat” of the family, often keeping people in line. She was a “tell it like it is” woman, never holding back how she felt or what she thought. If you did not like what was said, that was too darn bad. Along with her active lifestyle, her sassy and firecracker personality attributed to her longevity.
Irene loved life, and the simple life. She was the strongest and most stubborn person we knew. She will be dearly missed and remembered for her strength, love, inspiration, and admiration for life.
Visitation will be held 2-4pm Sunday, April 23, 2023 in Ettinger Funeral Home, 860 Highway 2, Elmsdale. Funeral service 11 AM Tuesday, April 25, 2023 in St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church, Enfield, Deacon Dan Bowden officiating. Burial to follow in the Parish Cemetery
