Sommerauer, Irene
Irene passed away peacefully at Guelph General Hospital, on January 25, 2023 in
her 93rd year. Irene was born in Rakamaz, Hungary on October 26, 1930. Irene is
predeceased by her parents Frigyes Ling and Anna Losonczki, her sister Anna
Bekesi, her brothers Frigyes Ling and Ignatius Ling and her beloved husband John
Sommerauer. Irene was a loving sister to Leslie Ling (Theadora Ling), Gizi Martony
(Janos Martony) and Marika Mina (Janos Mina). Loving mother to Dr. John
Sommerauer (Debi Roberson) and Susan McCormick (John McCormick). Wonderful
grandmother (Nagymama) to Shannon Sommerauer Douma (Randy Douma),
Lindsay Sommerauer (John Suschkov), Emily McCormick (Avery Andress), Sarah
McCormick (Daniel Cenedese), Abbey Sommerauer, Elora Sommerauer, Jillian
Sommerauer, Brienne Sommerauer and proud great grandmother of Lucas Douma,
Jacob Douma, Arlo Sommerkov and Remi Sommerkov.
Irene grew up in Budapest and received training and worked as a laboratory
technician. She and John married in 1955. Irene and John immigrated to Canada in
1957 and worked on a farm in Leamington, Ontario. They moved to Guelph in 1959
and she began working at W. C. Woods Co. where she worked for 26 years. Irene
had many friends and was very active in her social circle. She was dedicated to her
extended family and friends. She was inclusive, generous, loving and kind to all. She
was an active member of the Canadian Hungarian Club, loved to dance, play card
games, and cook her traditional Hungarian dishes. Irene was a member of Holy
Rosary Parish for 63 years. Irene positively touched the lives of her extended family
and friends, was loved by all, and will be dearly missed.
Irene led an active healthy life until her last decade. She was a resident at LaPointe-Fisher Nursing home for the past 4 and a half years. The family thanks all of Irene’s caregivers at LaPointe-Fisher Nursing home for their compassionate and loving care and assistance.
Cremation has taken place. The family will receive their friends at the Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin St. N., Guelph on Sunday, February 19, 2023 from 6-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass for Irene and her late husband John (2021) will be held at Holy Rosary Church 175 Emma St. Guelph on Monday, February 20, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Lounge at the Hart Chapel 1099 Gordon St. Guelph. All are welcome to livestream the service on the internet via ZOOM. Link can be found on the funeral home website. Entombment of ashes in Our Lady Immaculate Mausoleum, Marymount Cemetery, Guelph, will take place at a later date.
