Obituary
It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, Irene Theresa Sylvia Malowany, on August 11, 2023.
Irene was born on January 26, 1939, on the farm in Rama, Saskatchewan to Nicholas and Sophia (Nee Yurchak) Tretiak.
She took her schooling in Rama and finished grade 12. She then moved to Toronto for 3 years working there and making many friends. She hated to leave but had to come home to help her parents on the farm. There was something else that was always pulling her back to her home and his name was William. She got married to William Malowany on September 15, 1962. They made their home on William’s parents homestead and had 7 children.
Irene and William worked very hard on the farm working the fields and keeping many animals to feed the growing family of 7. Irene was also a very good gardener and cook. She would have a garden on every quarter of land and have bountiful harvests of vegetables which she would can or freeze to get the family through the cold winters.
Irene was also very involved in the Ukrainian Catholic church in Rama. She was the Cantor for many years, and learned this skill from her father, Nicholas, and her brother-in-law, Nick Danylyshen. She enjoyed cantoring very much and also helped out in other ways with making meals in the parish hall, cleaning the church and yard, and helping out with anything else that needed doing.
Irene was very fond of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was always inquiring about them and was very excited to see them. She was a great Baba and GrandBaba or GB.
Irene was predeceased by her husband, William; her parents, Nicolas and Sophia Tretiak; father and mother-in-law, Semko and Tekla Malowany; sisters, Anne Lubinski and Olga Dorosh, brothers, Norman Tretiak, Eugene Tretiak, and Terry Tretiak; and grandchildren: Patricia Hunter, Seraphina Katerina Malowany,
Micah Blaze Malowany, and Aphram Joy Malowany.
Irene is survived by her seven children: Laura (Ken) Buchynski, Daria (Fr. Jeffery) Stephaniuk, Vladimyr (Lisa) Malowany, Robert (Antonette) Malowany, RoseAnne Malowany (Tom), Cynthia Hunter, Fr. Basil (Angela) Malowany; grandchildren: William Hunter, Matthew Buchynski, Sarah Buchynski, Orysia Stephaniuk (Andrew Masurat), Nadia Stephaniuk, Kathryn Stephaniuk (Kieran Greening), Nicole
Stephaniuk, Olivia Stephaniuk, Natalia Stephaniuk, Jonathon Malowany, Christopher Malowany, Sophia Malowany, Katherine Malowany, Samuel Malowany; great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Abigail Masurat; and one brother, Bill (Albina) Tretiak, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Prayer Service will be held at 7:00 pm, Thursday, August 17, 2023, and Requiem Divine Liturgy at 10:00 am, Friday, August 18, 2023, with both services celebrated from Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Rama, Saskatchewan. Rite of Committal will follow at the Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Parish Cemetery, Rama, SK.
