With heavy hearts and great sadness, we announce the passing of Ian Skogstad on Wednesday January 25th. He was born in Regina, SK December 10, 1941 raised on the farm in Rose Valley, SK. He graduated in 1961 from Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute in Outlook SK. He was known for his real friendly smile. Relocating to Calgary where he met Sandy McLuckie. They were married in 1964, moving to St. Albert, AB in 1968 where they still reside.
The early years were busy with raising two children, Karyn and Kevin, curling, nordic skiing, alpine skiing, teaching gun safety classes to the boy scouts, and range officer at the Strathcona Shooting range. Many years spent breeding Irish Setter dogs and attending dog shows. This began the lifelong friendships with our beloved extended family of ‘the Noses’. His business career started as a credit manager for GE and Building Products, moving to sales with Banville culminating in owing his own business Keycon Construction from 1980 until retirement in 2006.
His children kept him busy with their sports and activities. Many hours spent on the ice refereeing and eventually coaching hockey. He was known for his beautiful tenor voice performing with the St Albert Singers for 42 years and he was a long standing member of the United Church choir. As part of Musical Mania, he proudly shared the stage in Days of the Klondike with his grandson Adam at age 75.
In the later years Ian was busy belonging to many organizations including Ivanhoe Lodge #124 and Al Shamal Shriners. He cherished his Monday morning coffee group and he was well-known for his hours of clowning with the Shrine and Santa gigs at Christmas.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Sandy of 58 years, his daughters Karyn Molder (Cam) and Michelle Skogstad, grandchildren Bryce Molder (24), Colm Molder (21), Paige Skogstad (20), Adam Skogstad (18) and Elliott Skogstad (16). His sister Adele Larson (Dennis) many nieces and nephews and also his adopted family (the Noses). He was tragically predeceased by his loving son Kevin (2021).
A memorial will be held Saturday, February 11 at 2:00 PM at St. Albert United Church – please join us afterwards to raise a glass and share some stories.
