Hendrik (Henry) Smid of Athens, Ontario
Born on December 10th, 1940, in Zwaagwesteinde, Friesland, Netherlands.
Passed on to be with His Lord and Saviour on Monday August 7th, 2023, at the age of 82 years.
Predeceased by his first wife Jane Smid (nee Beerda) in 1973, his parents Folkert and Jelske Smid (nee Swart), father in-law John Wilson, Mother in-law Hannah Wilson (nee Roberton), and brothers in-law Peter Schreiber and Marten Vanderkloet
He leaves behind his dedicated and loving wife of 48 years, Sally Smid (nee Wilson) and his children Shirley Huinink (Jim) of Kitchener, Frank Smid (Chastity Leween) of Portland, Lisa Dullemond (Allan) of Athens, Johnathan Smid (Kim Kennedy) of Ottawa, and Becky Smid (Mike Ingersoll) of Ottawa. He was loving Pap to Tess, Cicely, John, Joe, Corbin, Colton, Jane, Elizabeth (Derek), Allisa, William, Georgia, Josephine, Eli, Lucy, and Great-Grand Pap to Natalie & Caiden.
He will be missed by his siblings Alice Schreiber (Peter) of Guelph, Otie VanderKloet (Marten) of Athens, Charlie Smid (Marie) of Athens. As well as dear members of the Wilson and Beerda families. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, friends, community members and loved ones.
Henry worked as a land surveyor at age 15 until his retirement. Gardening was always a passion as he worked on his vegetables, tended to his flowers, and cared for his fish. No Red Squirrels allowed. He was well known in the Athens and Brockville communities for his volunteering at school, church, hospital and the Joshua Bates Center. As a member of the Athens Fire Department, he co-established the emergency database used for locating properties in Athens and the township. He always impressed his family with his building skills and his tracking of family genealogy. In recent years he was happiest sharing his research into our local history.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported Mom and Dad through recent years. We are especially grateful for those who responded to all of Dad’s needs in the past week. He was able to leave in peace.
Visitation: Friday August 11, 2023, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. Athens Christian Reformed Church
Private interment: New Glen Elbe Cemetery
Service Saturday August 12, 2023, at 11 a.m. Athens Christian Reformed Church. Light luncheon following service.
Donations can be made to the Ottawa Heart Institute, Brockville General Hospital, or Athens Heritage Society.
